My brother in law bought a property with a house and a large detached garage. The house and the garage each had a separate feed from the power co. transformer pole to a meter and tnen to a 200 amp cutler hammer box. The meter on the garage is pulled. If he just has the power co. put the meter back in for the garage it will mean a separate bill and maybe a commercial rate. He wants everything on one meter. A 100 amp would be plenty for what he needs to do in the garage. Any ideas?

When I built my garage I got an estimate from an electrician to put a 320 Amp Meter box and split to two 200 AMP boxes house and garage. The estimate was $7500. So I decided to get the utility company to install a separate line for free. And yes I do pay the commercial rate for that, but $7500 is a lot of electricity.

After some research looks like the best option might be to have the power company disconnect the power from the pulled meter base on the garage, install a 90 amp. breaker in the house and run #2 al to the panel in the garage. What am I missing?

Personally, I would go with the two electric meters rather than run a cable from the house to the garage. Yes, there will be a monthly meter charge, but the power company will connect it up and you won't have to do anything except enjoy it. I can't say this for certain, but I doubt they will even charge you for connecting it up.
