The clean out continues of father-in-laws stuff......so many questions. It may have the numbers 1884 on the end view.

It reminds me of part of a shaker grate, but gears on them are pretty rare. Not unheard of, though.

I'm guessing ...
a grate for a coal stove or furnace . several would mesh together so when you turned one of them, the others would turn as well ( to sift out the ash & slag
