Any information on a 10B New Britain Drill chuck???

I recently purchased this big New Britain drill chuck and i'd like to disassemble and clean it up. HOWEVER i have no idea how to get it apart. I doesn't seem to have a 'sleeve' that u can press off like a jacobs chuck. Any information would be great if u have some experience or thoughts. BTW if u turn the arbor it opens and closes the jaws....this prevents holding the arbor in a fixed position and 'unthreading' anything using the arbor.

I think you need a pin face spanner, dropped into the two holes on the shaft side, then unscrew.


And beware of springs holding the jaws apart and centered, they may go shooting off into parts unknown if not attended to.

ok never thought about springs. do u have any idea what part of the drill chuck will separate from the other? Basically what part of the chuck should i clamp in a vise with soft jaws while im unthreading with the spanner? In the past when i had a stubborn jacobs chuck sleeve i took a big allen wrench and put it up in the jaws and then tightened the jaws down on that. Not sure if that is what i should do here though.

In the third pic, showing the two pin holes, the seam right above your hand should separate. Clamping where your hand is should work. Final pieces should separate like this, bottom plate, chuck and tip.

The guts should look kinda like this, three jaws, three springs between them.

Mine are two different chucks, a two jaw and a 3 jaw. Didn't have an exact match for yours.

ahh ok. I assume the thread was just a regular thread and not a 'reverse' thread or anything? i have mine soaking in kroil at the moment to help things out while i make the custom spanner wrench
