Any iPhone/Electric Gate Experts Here?

I need to upgrade/repair my home built electric/remote control gate. It was operating on a Craftsman universal receiver which is now discontinued. Used a common Liftmaster remote. I want to put in a new reciever which can use common(low priced) remotes as well as iPhone control. Ideas?

Poke around the Smart Things Site. You might be able to adapt a Zigbee garage opener to work depending on how your gate is triggered.

This is what I did for all 4 of my overhead doors openers. as long as the opener wall switch is 24 volts, it should work just fine.

I love being able to open any door with my phone. I've always got my phone with me, but there is no way I'm going to carry 4, door remotes.

I'd just use a LiftMaster universal receiver with a Bluetooth receiver connected to it - something like a Tap2Pass or a similar smartphone receiver.

My buddy said this won't work; it will be sending 110 volts to the relays and will fry them. Now I'm stuck again.

In the photo below you can see a red and white wire connected, and a green and white wire connected. If I touch them together, the gate opens/closes. I basically need a remote controlled switch.


I am a total dummy when dealing with electrical/electronics.

Now that I think about it, the 888LM may not suit your needs. It's the new wall console upgrade for older Liftmaster operators. It itself contains the receiver, and makes older machines compatible with MyQ technology. However, it doesn't have a power input, and signal output like the other universal receivers. I don't know if it will work as a standalone unit.

The Liftmaster 850LM would work, if you could pull 24v off of those transformers. Search Google for a wiring diagram.

The Liftmaster 365LM is a 110v plug in receiver, and should be the same thing as the Craftsman one you had.

O.K. so I tired the 883LM as well as the 880LM, neither would work. Right now I just have a button with two screws on back, works fine, the others look to be the same principle, two screws on back, don't understand why they don't work.

So I broke down and called a serviceman out, he put on an 850LM, works great but still not able to do it from iPhone. Is there a product that does the same thing but is MyQ compatible?

Yep. You can buy a small computer called a raspberry pie. There are all sorts of attachments and options including relays. A simple program will allow you to connect via web browser (only available when connected via your wifi network.) Plenty of room for expansion too.

My brother in law did it with his garage door. Think he spent maybe $100 on the components and had it up and running pretty quick. He did the coding himself but there's a whole community centered around this stuff and they love sharing their programs.

As Playme mentioned it is a fairly easy project with a raspberry. My gate doesn't have wifi but I can text it to check if it is open or to open or close it from anywhere in the world. If I was a little better app programmer I'm sure I could make it into an app.

A couple of limit switch, a relay, 12v motor, and a car battery and you have a remote gate opener.

The Raspberry has too high a nerd factor for a lug like me. I really just want something similar to the 850LM that can be controlled with my iPhone. Maybe this will work?

Use a regular GD receiver for the regular remotes, and an Insteon garage door adapter for the iPhone control.
