Some guys were doing some work on my property. An excavator was being used. Somehow they lost control and put a hole in the siding. They put something there to fill the hole. Not sure what it is. I was not here and did not see any of this. All I see is the aftermath.

Anyhow, this is colorplus Hardy panel siding.

I am aware the whole panel could be replaced.

What are the other professional repair options?

The hole is probably maybe 1/2 inch wide and 2-3 inches long.

Hardie is cement based, that looks like wood filler to me,temporary at best.I’ve installed it for years but never had to repair anything larger than a nail hole.My guess is they’re going to have to replace the panel.

That patch looks like ****. However if it's "plastic wood" it's good for exterior use. Sand it down, re-apply if needed, paint it. Probably better than attempting to replace the entire panel.

This. It should be weather resistant for a good long time.
The most important thing with any Hardie product is to seal the edges. Every cut edge or broken edge should have a coat of paint, otherwise the warranty is void. It there are broken edges where moisture can get into the material and they're not sealed, you could have problems down the road.

Maybe call them and ask them what they used first ? Then decide on a course of action. Anything you do other than replace the panel will be an eyesore. Is this on a picture perfect house or a farm outbuilding ?

Why not the option of "you folks broke it, you replace it," first and foremost? :dunno:
