So I am wondering if good old ether starting fluid will kill coronavirus like 91% alky will. Local Walmart is sold completely out of alky, but they have lots of ether starting fluid. Any M.D.s here?

Ether would not work for your purposes. Not only does it evaporate too quickly to be a good sanitizer candidate, but it is also not all that toxic. FYI, 70% alcohol is more effective than 91%. Just buy denatured alcohol and dilute the 95% to 70%.

Vodka works too.

Not remotely. Tests of 40% alcohol (the typical vodka is 80 proof) show that hand cleaning with it leaves an INCREASE in bacterial hand counts (I'm a little surprised at that finding myself). At 60%, you get good sanitization.

I have 65 gallons of Sunoco methanol, if you'd like to try a little of that. It'll pretty much kill anything, including people.

Hey **** off haters. I'm talking about spraying it on stuff like doorknobs, and my hands too. I've used starting fluid for years to clean greasy parts, etc., and also on my hands, at times, to clean off grease. Ether used to be used for anesthesia, so it can't be too bad for you.

Vodka doesn't contain enought alky to kill most germs or virus.

I understood your question. Its a good question. Maybe chlorinated brake cleaner (red label, not green) if you didn't have anything else. Stay healthy my friend.

Methanol would make a good disinfectant if it weren't readily absorbed through the skin (and lungs).

not an MD, but watched one on TV. Starting fluid is going out of "season" Winter is essentially over, therefore there is little need for it. That would be my take. Oh and for the virus, I am more of a Jack Daniels kind of guy..... On the rocks please........

Walmart still has a lot in stock. I generally stock up in the Spring anyway, for summer. I also use it for cleaning rattle-can spray-tips.

In the winter I use it to clean around the gas cap and oil cap on my Stihl chainsaw, before gassing it up and adding bar oil. Works great! I love the stuff.

Viruses are harder to kill than Bacteria, but not as hard to kill as Prions (Mad Cow, CWD)

"Sterilization refers to any process that eliminates, removes, kills, or deactivates all forms of life (in particular referring to microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, spores, unicellular eukaryotic organisms such as Plasmodium, etc.) and other biological agents like prions present in a specific surface, object or fluid"

Starting Fluid is useful stuff, Everyone could use a few more cans.

Clorox disinfecting wipes are probably cheaper and would work better. Diluted bleach on a rag is fine. Google to get the concentration....not sure the exact number off the top of my head.
