I am going to be in the USA next week. In New York City. I was wondering if anyone had any reccomendations on tools to get while I am there that are either only available in the USA or are much cheaper in the USA?

The obvious one is Snap on stuff but I don't suppose I wil be able to flag down a tool truck. Any ideas anyone?

Sales tax will kill you in the city.
Consider NJ for your clothing and tool purchases. If you can find them in the UEZ,the sales tax is only 3.5%
There is no sales tax on clothing and shoes in NJ
Stay away from Times Square(tourist trap)

Not exactly.

clothing and footwear under $110 are exempt from New York City's 4.5% sales tax. Starting on April 1, 2012, clothing and footwear under $110 will be exempt from New York State's 4% sales tax.

Not many tool options in NYC. Not a lot of auto shops in Manhattan and so you'll have a very hard time finding a Snap-on truck. You won't have much better luck in the other boroughs because shops are so spread out.

in NYC, clothing and shoes are tax free upto $110. So if you are buying clothes, break up the purchases to keep them under the 125 limit. There is just way more variety in NYC then in NJ if you are not driving. And cash is king in some small shops, with a little smoosing tax is forgotten to be added.

If you are visiting macy's in manhattan with the wife, go see customer service. They will give you a all day savings pass for 10%.

Eating is cheap or expensive, but you will find great meals in any price range. Good rule of thumb for tipping at a restaurant is slightly less then double the tax. 15-18% is the norm.

Tool front,
There are 2 home depots in manhattan, on on 23rd st between 5th and 6th ave and one up at 58th st and 3rd ave. Unless you have a car, you will not be able to get to the harbor freight store easily. There is a sears in jersey city. Just couple of stops on the Path train. And about a 10 min walk form the mall there is a home depot as well. And it is 2 dollar a person to ride the bath. Just get off at the newport stop and walk to the mail. Lowes is not easy to get to either if you do not have a car.

What every the price tag said at the big stores, add about 9% sale tax.

Snap on truck, good luck. They make their rounds once an week to pepboys in jersey close to the newport mall. But they take a order and delivery the next week. They rearly stock stuff.

There is a graingers in manhattan that is very well stock but pricey down on spring st and verick.

Home deport carries a huge line of milwaukee power tools. But all the chargers are single voltage 120v 60hz. But you can get a converter here and use it in the UK. A double 110v port converter will run about 50 dollars that is rated at 1800w. While most the chargers are rated at 145w.

If you can get to lowes, they have a larger bosch and hitachi selection as well as dewalt.

They are not easy to get to without a car, but they do have a good assortment to tools. The brooklyn one is kinda doable as tourist without a car.

Thanks for the reply folks.

In the UK we have a store called Machine Mart which is exactly like Harbor Freight. I had a look in a HF last year in Florida and they seem to sell exactly the same stuff as Machine Mart.

We also have stores just like Lowes.

I was joking about flagging down a SO tool truck.

I dont suppose there is anywhere to browse Motorcycle related stuff? Although I am not looking for an HD emporioum. (not that there is anything wrong with HD's or cruisers, but they don't float my boat).

I have a few items from Motion Pro which seem OK so is there anywhere in NYC that stocks Motion pro stuff?

Don't know if this counts as tools but I'd say bring your own tableware unless you want plastic forks, paper cups and no knives.

I rarely buy things locally. Better selection online and better prices to boot. Free shipping from amazon and snap on as well. If you want help acquiring stuff via online orders, let me know. My office is a 30 min train ride from the city, so it would be fairly easy for you to scoop everything up assuming it's delivered before you arrive.

Snap on does free shipping off their website.
Harry Epstein has really good prices on stuff (but you have to add shipping).
http://store.harryepstein.com/

In stock items from both usually arrive in 2-3 days.

Where did you eat when you visited NYC? The street corner hot dog and kebab carts?

Generally if you pay for food first, such as at McDonalds, expect plastic utensils. If you sit down and order, you get silverware. Same as in every other country I've ever been to.

Haha! That post puzzled me too. Some of the best restaurants across the board, from dives to upscale, are to be found in NYC. Even if you don't know what's what, pick up a zagat guide/app and that will steer you in the right direction. But at the end of the day, if you really left the city and were unhappy with the food, you just didn't try at all and went to all the wrong places.

In the only town in Pennsylvania, Bloomsburg.
There are no bargains in NYC, except the Staten Island ferry, unless your from Europe :bs::headshake. Seriously, you can get a better prices anywhere else in the USA. My cousin from Ireland always buys clothes here.
Watch your wallet, keep it in your front pocket, goes for your watch, especially in crowded subways, hope your camera has a strong strap. As noted by other poster, do not purchase anything within 7 blocks of 42nd street. Do fall for anyone asking for money, no matter the hard luck story.
Don't get me wrong NYC is not a terror town (like it was in the 70s), but you need to take precautions, especially if your a foreigner..you guys stick out .

Take the Circle Line boat ride around Manhattan, gives a nice perspective of the enormous size of the city. Sailing under the Brooklyn, George Washington, Wiiliamsburgh, and other really cool to look at bridges is quite a marvelous experience. Not to mention seeing the Statue of Liberty, and the downtown Manhattan skyline. As far as dining, as others have said around Times Square is very touristy. Taking in the Times Square scene is a must, as well as seeing a Broadway show (you can get same day tickets 1/2 price at the TKTS booth - there's a long line), but I would find out of the way special places to eat. Yelp actually is a decent way to track down restaurants of which there are many, that are of outstanding quality. Zagats is also a great way to find them. Let's put it this way, there are over 20,000 restaurants in New York City, so it pays to do some research. The area south of Houston street in Nolita and Soho has lots of really nice and not that expensive restaurants and is also a cool place for a stroll. Go for a walk down 5th Avenue starting at 59th street and see Rockefeller Center. Shop at small boutiques if you like in the village (greenwich village) and Soho, check out the large department stores such as Macy's 34th Street, Bloomingdales 59th on the east side, Saks 5th avenue across from Rockefeller center, if you want to drop some serious coin try Bergdorf Goodman across from the Plaza Hotel (which is mainly condos now if you want to really buy a big souvenir - studios start at $1.5 million). See some museums like the Metropolitan Art museum on 5th and 80th, the Guggenheim further up 5th around 89th, the Frick down 5th at 70th and the Museum of Modern Art - the MOMA at 53rd between 5th and 6th. I've lived in the city for 20 years and seen maybe 20% of it, so it's size is just enormous when you count all the boroughs. Take in a game at Yankee stadium in 'da Bronx, too, though it's not the original house that Ruth built, the Bornx bombers are pretty good at scoring runs and the new yankee Stadium is pretty nice, actually a lot more luxurious than the old, gritty Yankee stadium but the old one had so much character. Have fun!!

Even if you're not in NYC, you can still get some NYC hipster designer clothes on sale, today's the last day of the Barney's warehouse sale. Discounts up to 90% off, free shipping on orders above $150. And I think if you spend less than $110 on each item, there's no tax as well. These are fancy duds and such things though, so even with the discount, the price is still high.

Well okay, kidding a bit. We ate in some restaurants and got silverware but a lot of them just give you a fork, you have to ask for the knife.

Our Starbucks, if we take-out we get paper cup. If we eat in we get a real cup and a lot of the time, stainless steel too.

Not a criticism, just a different culture.

There is a big Graingers on Varick Street near the entrance to the Holland Tunnel -lots of choice and will seem cheap compared to the UK, although not by US standards.

Ah, got it. Still sounds weird but not outlandish.

Some Starbucks will serve food on real plates, but I imagine that 19/20 customers take their coffee to go, hence the default to paper.

It all depends, for high end designer fashion you really can not beat NYC. Routinely all the big designer have their sample sales. And $15k designer bag sells for 800 dollars. And 2k prada jackets sells for 600 dollars. Good luck trying to find that in most other parts of the US. Also our TJ Max stores carry prada and other high end brands down on wall street.

Cameras, 3 of the top online sites are base in nyc. BH Photos, Adorama, and J and R.
And the largest online scuba gear shop has their store front in NYC, and no where else the US or the world, have I found prices that can match Leasurepro for scuba gear.

If you are looking for serious luggage Altman luggage is in NYC as well. And cash is king there.

It really depends on what you are looking for, and generally if you know where to look, you will have a hard time finding another brick and mortar store in the US that can beat them.

There are 5 boro's in NYC. Manhattan is just one boro of NYC. Staten Island is were you want to go...

If your a Beatle's fan you should find a Snap On dealer in Staten Island. Before you go to the Snap On Truck stop by Mandolin Bros. George Harrison used to buy his Ukulele's from there. George was a Ukulele collector and player. Also Sir Paul Sent his Beatle bass to Mandolin Bro. ,with an ******, for repairs, from the UK, done by Mandolin Bros. Also Joni Mitchel mentions going to Mandolin Bro. in one of her songs. . A lot of famous singers and song writers go Mandolin Bros. in Staten Island. you can play any instrument in the store. It's like going to a Music museum. It's a good chance you might see someone famous there. Tell Stanley Jay I said Hi. Across the street from Mandolin Bros. there is an Irish Pub that has great food. It's a great day out. I do it at least twice a year. You can take a ferry from Manhatann to Staten Island.

Actually, while manhattan may not have many snap on routes the remaining 4 boroughs have dozens of territories. My friend's father has a route in Brooklyn in coney island.
I can tell you for sure that there is a snap on driver who is on northern blvd (25a) Tuesday mornings in long island city. He stops at the used car sales at 35-02 northern blvd around 9 am.
If you really want to get there you can take a cab or subway. It's right over the 59th street bridge which you can even walk over.

As for coming to NYC...keep your senses up and pay attention, crazy lives here.

:confused:Have you ever been on a snap on truck?
Usually about a $100,000.00 worth of tools to browse through and they aren't display models.

Unless your are really her to buy tools, I would not spend to much time hunting for them. There is allot to see and do in the city. And if it is a vacation. Use it as such. Running after a snap on truck or going really out of your way to look for tools would not be my idea of a nice vacation especially it is a family one.

The HD and Sears are easy to get to, and newport nj has a great river view of lower manhattan, and has a nice river walking area. And the Mall. Not not really going out of your way. The HD right by the flatiron building, and can be visited during tourist stuff.

If you want some high quality tools, the grainger on verick street is in soho and the west village. Allot to do and see in that area. But they do carry a full line of proto tools, and armstrong tools, SK and all the major power tool brands and IR for air tools.

Enjoy your trip, don't waste a day hunting for tools.

I agree in that it is a vacation, not a tool hunting trip. I was just wondering if there were any tool or motorcycle places worth a visit while I am there.

I have been to NYC a few times before so have done quite a few of the usual tourist things although on previous visits I was childless so this time I have a 12 year old in tow so will be doing repeats of previous site seeing things like the circle ferry, Staten island, Empire State etc.

Thanks for all the feedback and I will enjoy the trip because even though I dont usually like big cities I do love New York as a vacation destination even though i would probably hate to live there (just like I would hate to live in any big city)

The only real motorcycle shops in nyc are BMW and Ducati/Triumph. But they are not much of a savings. There is not hein gericke, louis or polo type shops in the city for bike stuff. Not to many in the US like that really.
