Any of you ever build (or research) a smoke machine? Seen the YouTube vids of the paint can and charcoal, I'm looking for more along the lines of plug in (110 or 12v) heat up baby/mineral oil kinda deal. And adapter ideas. One of those things I can't justify buying, but could spend some time on.

Frost plug heater insert, soup can, 12v fan to hook into car 12v battery and associated plumbing to block intake. The fan would "pressurize" the system to push smoke out of the offending area.

I was just talking about this a month ago

5 gallon homer bucket, clear hose I can run through the lid with a lit cigar stuck in it. Threaded air hose coupler through the side of it with a female ****** on the inside of the bucket as a nut to hold it in place.
Hook up the air hose and dial it down to 5 to 10 psi. Forced air keeps cigar lit.

do you mean a smoke machine for Halloween/shows (fog machine)?
or
do you mean a smoke machine for finding engine leaks?

if the latter, there is a great thread on here from several years ago if you do a search.

if the former, I just buy them used at yard sales. have 3 of the medium size ones from when I used to do a big haunted house, they don't go for more than $10 if you look around...if you really want the smoke to stick around, use dryer duct and tape it to the output, run it through a Styrofoam cooler filled with ice, it gets really dense and will leave a nice fog around the ground.

Back in college, I made a bong out of an apple.

I knew someone was gonna go there.

And yes I'm referring to a leak detector, mainly for evap leaks. So I gotta find something to hook up to the evap port, filler neck etc. Like the computer fan idea...

I just have a buddy come over to smoke a cigar and blow the smoke into a hose. Yours sounds more elegant.

I'm going to have to keep my eyes on this thread, we have a player piano at home that has stopped working, a smoke machine to track down the leaks seems like a good idea.

Just get you a big ol'doobie and a piece of hose inhale and then exhale through hose, kidding but you got a good idea but I have never seen one to see how it works but don't bee keepers use a smoker can't you modify one of those with a hose and fittings and then you got a hand held unit.

I made one out of the party city smoke machine but never finished it as we solved the problem without it. It's sitting on my shelf I had my father make me up a front piece with NPT thread out of Almn and I was going to attach a low psi regulator, but just never got around to it. I will get some pictures today or tomorrow..

Big earn, love it.I'm thinking running a computer fan off the 12v source as well as heating the wick, then I don't have to drag the air hose too. I like the ammo can better than paint can.

You jest, but I actually did make the "engine bong" off of a post on IATN.net (subscription-only mechanics' forum) several years back. It's a lit cigarette in a copper pipe fitting, connected to a squeeze bulb with a vacuum line check valve on either side of the bulb. Output hose to the intake manifold.

You squeeze the bulb to smoke the cigarette (it burns incredibly fast - I burnt through a whole pack in no time and actually had to go buy cigarettes for the first time in my life).

Seems like something cheap and functional could be made from one of these vape things.

I just bought one long ago. Expensive, yes. But I didn't have to mess with it and it worked every time. Made me money easily. One of the best purchases I made. The real issue is making smoke that will stay smokey without dissipating.
