I am looking for some inspiration to paint my recently finished wooden workbench, framed out of 2x4's and hardboard for the work surface. I was thinking along the lines of a dark gray or black base...ala gladiator.

Has anyone painted theirs? Or keep it natural? )

Hey djjsr............those look nice, but do you think a bottom shelf on the bottom of them would have give you more storage space?

I paint everything. If you stand still too long in my garage, you might just end up green.

But the tops of my wood benches are stained.

I've got some big cabinets that take care of storage pretty well. I was thinking about putting some more drawers under there.

Here's a couple that I built about 5 years ago. They are 2x6 frames with 4x4 front legs and the backs are bolted to the walls. The tops are 3/4" MDF with a few coats of clear on them.

Pics of clearcoated MDF tops are in order now. :bounce: Looks good from here. I'll dig up a pic tonight, but I painted mine black with the dark black laminate countertops that Lowes sells. The ones before that, I painted white with the black tops.

Very nice stuff so far guys!

Just wondering how you muonted those drawers underneath the worktop? I would like to do the same. Were they made from scratch or purchased assembled?

I built this in my basement recently. I framed it with mated 2x4's, 3/4" plywood, 1/4" Masonite work surfaces, and edged the top with 1x3" maple.

The doors are Masonite that slide in channels cut into the 2x4's (I made the top channel deeper so I can lift the doors up and drop them into the bottom tracks). The door under the bandsaw is hinged.

The Masonite top is screwed atop the single sheet of 3/4" plywood. I used countersunk flat-top screws because didn't want to glue the hardboard down.

I primed and painted the bench, using gloss black laytex. Black gets dirty, but I was trying to match a metal bench I already had in the opposite corner. But I would recommend using a dark gray instead to hide the dirt and dust.
