Any Quality Fans?

I live in a smaller two bedroom apartment on the third floor. I like the apartment but keeping it cool is a little bit of an issue.

We have the basboard heating system(which cannot be completely shut off). So there is heat being constantly pumped in to the apartment. We have it turned as low as it can go. As for AC we basically have a widow unit mounted in the wall. This works well its really not too loud.

When its not too warm out we just open the windows, and slider(although the slider does not have a screen, still waiting for the landlord to fix this issue). And I have two small fans that I use to circulate air, and at least being up higher we get a decent breeze. The small fans I have work decently well, but are really loud even on their lowest setting.

What I am looking for is a good quality fan. I would like something that can move a lot of air, and quiet. I would like a oscillating fan, prefereable something taller. I have always liked old fans because they were pretty quiet and moved a lot of air. The problem is that they are not easy to find, and usually command a premium, but mostly I just don't know where to look.

So are there any suggestions for good quality fans, that are pretty quiet and still move a lot of air, or a good place to find old fans?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Take a look at FANIMATION Ive met this guy, he is the REAL DEAL when it comes to fans...and he has an AWESOME museum of fans at his place just north of Indy.
If you are going low budget, just get a couple box fans and angle them upward. They still work as well as they used to.

Hey thanks for the link! Some pretty cool looking fans, unfortunately didn't see prices. I will definitely have to keep those in mind though!

Any other suggestions? I'd really like an older fan. I ran across one that a friend had, but he said it randomly started spinning backwards one day. I would have needed some work, but he didn't really wanna part with it.

Yeah I have a bunch of really good fans, but they're 100+ years old.
Nothing you can buy new now is worth a damn and might burn you
house down.
A $7 Walmart fan ceassed up a couple years ago, caught fire and we were
VERY lucky we caught it in time or it would have burned our house down.

It's very unfortunate that this is the way it is. These new plastic fans, with plastic blades just aren't appealing, and as stated noisy. Maybe one day I'll find me one like Geezer there...

Geez,

I'm assuming it oscillates as well? That should be a nice fan once your done. Looks like it's in pretty good shape as well! Wherever did you find it? and if I may ask, what did it cost you?

Not sure why you're not exerting your legal rights . . . . .

. . . To COMPLAIN to your landlord !!!

If you are constantly getting HEAT during the summer time, it's high time to Complain to Landlord to get heater fixed. I'm sure landlord is not paying your electric bill or cooling bill, so why you putting up with HEAT to overcome with cooling efforts during summer ???

At minimum, you can give landlord a chance to fix the baseboard heater problem . . . . if he fails to act within reasonable time (say week to 10 days to come check it out), then tenant can get it repaired and DEDUCT from rent.

Time to quit being a Sheeple.

I have a few Vornado fans that work well at circulating the entire house. The vintage ones are collector favorites and quite pricey. The current ones are plastic, but a higher grade material than you normally find today but still priced above the usual fan. They push a lot of air and are pretty quiet.

+1 for Vornado fan . . . once you get the heat turned off !!

Worked for company that made the plastic parts for Vornado with plastic injection molding machines. The blades had to be just right or they would wobble and be worthless . . .
. . . back into the regrind pile. ;) Big outer housing for fan was big mold and neat to see running.

I've got Vornado fan running right now circulating air in my house.

Well from the way I understood it, the baseboard heat(hot water) flows throughout the whole apartment building, and we are not charged for that. It is also connected to the hot water system, as we do not pay for water either. So by shutting off the heat system, then the water would get shut off too.

Wow, sounds like you got a great deal! Amazing looking fan, and I'm sure it will serve you well for years to come.

Oops meant to multi quote last time, but are the reasonably quiet? My step dad has one, and he seems to like it, but it was louder than the other fan he had. That was only a comparison of his fans, it could be quieter than the one I have.

When I was looking for a well-built fan years ago, I ended up with just a basic Patton floor fan. It doesn't oscillate, but it doesn't need to! It moves a huge volume of air even on 'Low'. Very quiet and all metal. Rubber mounts, rubber feet. Here's a You Tube link of it (amazingly----is ANYTHING not on YouTube??)

From what I read, I'm not sure if this is still how they make them, but if you can find one like this, grab it! Even on 'low' and sitting on the floor, it will circulate a good breeze through a large area.

I would definitely prefer something like a metal Patton to a plastic box fan.

A buddy has one like this
Westinghouse_16RWF_2-Speed_Vintage_Electric-Fan_web.jpg

its an older Westinghouse. I am trying to get more info on it as it appeals to me. The only problem they said was that one day while it was running it just decided to stop and spin the other direction. No matter what we tried to do it will stop and spin backwards. I know that's not supposed to be possible, but that's what they say. (Just looked it up, seems to be a capacitor could be the issue). Still don't know a good price..

He asked me what I would be willing to pay for it, but I have not given him a value as I have to look into the issue, and it is in rougher shape. Cool nonetheless.

It's not older, but it's well made and works very well, quiet as can be esp on low but still moves a lot of air, has oscillation, pause, timer and remote. I've had one for 10 years now, still works perfectly.....I like it because it fits nicely in a corner, and takes up very little room, plus the remote is nice!

amazon has it for $60 but I'll bet you can get it locally too, and it comes in all different sizes (heights) and features.

Oh, and turn the baseboard heat off for gosh sake!

You know I have a tower ceramic heater and often times I have wished it was a fan too. Something like that might work reasonably well for my uses. Thanks for the input!

Where do I start here....

As a renter -

In all my years as a renter (17-30), I NEVER asked a landlord to fix something - it never would have occurred to me! I just ALWAYS fixed it myself.

In general -

Check your local rental regs first - In SK, you CANNOT deduct ANYTHING from rent. You have to request the repairs from the landlord, then if not done in a reasonable time, you go to the rentalsman board (here) and make a formal request, with a set time to repair. IF still not done, THEN the rentalsman makes the determination to repair and charge landlord.

As a Landlord -

I DO PAY THE ELECTRICITY, HEAT and HW in my buildings - it's included in the rent I charge (partly why we have a waiting list for tenancy).

I would prefer the tenant tell me about any issues ASAP and I'll have them repaired ASAP.

Time to quit giving out your opinions as fact! ;)

Well that westinghouse I posted is mine for $20. Just need to pull it apart and find the capacitor and replace that. Then probably repaint it, and find a replacement handle that isn't broke. But for now it will definitely do the job!!

At the moment I caved and bought a window A/C unit for the bedroom to help keep it cool, now each one has to cool a smaller area, and at night we can close the door, and turn the one in the living room off. With it being as warm as it has been (mid 90's high humidity) it was the best option.
