Any reason why I shouldn't use PVC jacket MC cable for barn power?

We're looking to run some power out to a barn - about 160 feet total run. Looking to do a 50A 240v service. So I'm thinking 6AWG copper or 2AWG aluminum wire would be appropriate. Unfortunately the home is a 1700s farm house, and the breaker panel is on the opposite side of the house that faces the barn. The basement is a rough-hewn-log and field-stone disaster, so running conduit throughout the basement would be a complete nightmare. Not impossible, but it would be very difficult.

So the plan was to do something like aluminum MHF to the barn, and then transition to 6-3 nm-b on either end with a junction box to simplify final connection. But then you need quite large boxes, the rather spendy connectors to make the copper-aluminum connection, and so on.

Then I remember reading something about "Teck cable" on here, and decided to look into it:


So 6AWG copper, 3 conductor w/ground, pvc jacketed MC cable rated for direct burial. This cable appears to be able to do everything we want in a single run from the house to the barn. Yeah, it's about $1/foot more than aluminum options, but we completely eliminate the need for conduit, boxes, and expensive connectors to transition from different wire types. But we're basically talking an extra $160 to save tons of work and labor. Just one straight home run from the breaker panel to the barn...

...am I missing something? Is there any reason to NOT go this route?

I like conduit, in case anything goes wrong, but that could add $$ to the cost .

2 cents/ foot cheaper here:

We do direct burial armoured cable like that in Canada all the time. (Teck or ACWU).

My shop is powered by #1 tech cable, why? Dig the trench, flop the cable in, bury it. All done by myself and local excavator guy. Been there for 10 years, works great.

I prefer conduit. If something fails, you dont have to redig the trench

How many times have you removed old wires out of a pipe and pulled new.
A fair question. I have had to do this three times in my life but in each case this was only necessary because the original wire install had been botched. Worst install involved nm-b cable in the conduit that had been spliced with electrical tape.

I installed ACWU 2-2-2-4 for a 60a panel in the shop. 160' ish feet total run. From the main panel- 10' to the attached garage- 40' to the trench-100' to the shop and 5' up to the panel. $400 for the ACWU. I couldn't find a cheaper, easier or faster way to do it. Yeah it could fail in the ground but so could THHN and so could it's conduit. I felt that it was well worth the risk. If I had to do it again, I would use it again. Apparently is was designed to be used in northern Ontario where the Canadian sheild prevents burial so it can be run on the surface over rocks or whatever is in the way. Honestly I don't really feel that there is a downside.
