Any recommendations for a REALLY quiet muffler?

I own a Dixie Chopper, it has a 27HP Generac engine.

AND IT IS LOUD.

I want to take the stock muffler off and replace it with something really quiet from motorcycle or something.

Any advice where to start?

A lot of the noise may come through the engine case and not the exhaust.

I know a lot of people who have tried to quiet generators down with auto type mufflers and it has made very little difference. The engine cases just aren't thick enough to absorb sound.

Best recommendation is to add some mufflers to your ears. Commercial mowers are designed to be used with hearing protection.

Unless it's a liquid cooled engine your just ******* up a rope. Air cooled engine manufactures install mufflers 1-2 db louder than the mechanical noise of the engine. Otherwise every tom, ****, and Harry would be complaining that their engine is ready to explode. Some designs such as the Gx Hondas singles and ohc Subaru robins have less noise and therefore quieter mufflers.

Most air cooled vtwins sound like a couple of 3/8 nuts in a two pound coffee can being shaken by a meth addled monkey when a quiet muffler is installed

I have driven multiple zero turns. I know how noisy the "engine and machine" is. Regardless, the exhaust on this one *****. It is considerably louder than the exmark, grasshopper, and older Dixie that I previously had.

Regardless if it quiets it down any at all that would be great.

i would also recommend a take-off harley muffler. If you have any bike shops around you, I bet a quick phone call gets you a couple different OEM mufflers that you can try.

Not sure where the exhaust is pointed, but making sure it is directed away from the operator would be a good step.

I agree, I'd position the exhaust so that it exits towards the ground. I've heard the the supertrapp mufflers work really well, and you can adjust them to reduce sound levels, though I'm not sure how far you can go for your application before you'll see a reduction of not only noise, but hp and tq.
