We're building a two story garage. Each floor will have (2) PTAC's.
Upstairs I'm looking for units that are biased towards cooling. Downstairs units should be best at heating. Is anybody here familiar with these things?
Efficiency and reliability are the main considerations.

I'm going to be adding on a sun room at my house this summer and since my HVAC system is a little undersized now, I plan on putting a PTAC in the 16'x16' room. It's real near my HVAC closet, and all my ducting is overhead, I'm planning on redoing the HVAC system when I have to replace it and I'll duct the room then and likely move the PTAC out to my shop at that point (if I ever get one built).

I'm not familiar with efficiency or reliability, they're mainly used in motels so I'm thinking that either they're reliable, or easy to work on, or cheap to replace. I'm not sure efficiency is something they worry about in a hotel.

I have two amana PTACs in my shop/barn. Seem to work well for heating, haven't used them in cooling season yet. They are a bit loud. They are not as effecient as a mini-split but are less expensive and sometimes a better option. I purchased mine online and they were shipped from the factory. My impression is that all the brands are produced by the same manufacturers and re-branded.

I just finished editing a website for a ptac company in AZ. The workers there seemed really knowledgeable about all types of ptac units (Amana, Friedrich, LG, Carrier). You might want to give them a call. There website is <http://www.sunechocorp.com/>. There number is 866-600-3300. Hope that helps. Good Luck!
