One of the things I'll be looking for this fall when I go to school is a good impact gun with sockets. I know there are a number of routes I could go, such as HF earthquake and HF sockets and so on. I've got some of the HF sockets already and am pleased with them but they will be staying in my home box right now. Buying more HF or sunex/grey pnuematic sockets and an impact gun, either HF or IR is one possible plan...

I've heard that there may be deals to be had with Snap on impact gun and socket combos. Coupled with my student discount, this may be worth taking advantage of. Any idea on what kind of pricing and setups I can take a look at when talking to the Snap On dealer at school? I won't be buying until August, most likely. I'd be looking for an MG725 and both SAE and metric impact sockets.

(and I'm set for normal sockets and such. we are provided with excellent quality hand tools, so pretty much what I have to buy is large sockets, wrenches, and impact stuff)

the snappy guy gets weekly deals...or at least a normal one does...i'm not sure how the guys who go to schools get their stuff...

i haven't seen my guy have any deals with the 725 yet...last week he had one where you bought the 325 and got a 7 piece impact set with it...

honestly though man, just get a ir 232 and some GP or pittsburgh pro sockets and be happy...upgrade after you've been making money for a while

I just graduated college in an auto body collision program last month, i took advantage of my snap on discount like a month before graduation, Included in what i bought i got a mg725 and it came with a 1/2 drive short metric socket set and a 1/2 drive long metric socket set, i bought the short and long 1/2 drive sae sets separate, i can pm you the prices if you would like, I'm not going to disclose that information public because student prices are cheaper than what the trucks buy tools for and i don't want to release that kind of information publicly.

Normally I'd agree with you and do exactly that. There are a couple of factors, though.

1) I don't have to spend money on filling the rest of my tool box. All of my 1/4 to 1/2 chrome sets are provided, as are wrenches up to 1 5/16. All great quality brands, US made. I also don't have to buy specialty tools, that stuff is provided.

2) I want a really nice impact gun and sockets, and if it's advantageous to get it while I've got the discount, I want to. I don't foresee buying much tool truck stuff, but this is one of those times I will make an exception.

Since I'm not having to shell out money for the majority of my tools, I can afford to get some stuff that I would normally put way off. This is one of those things.

I have the mg725 at work and at home, very nice impacts. If you can get one half off with your discount go for it. Their sockets are nice, I recently bought the deep metric impacts from snap on. I would not buy them again unless it was a good price. If you decide against snap on Ingersoll rand titanium impacts are nice. For impact sockets search amazon for SK. When I get my sae impacts I am going with them. I can get the full 1/2 set shallow and deep from 3/8" to 1 1/2" for around $200. Snap on would be around $700-800 for the same set. I am slowly upgrading my impact sockets at work, craftsman usa, and taking the craftsmans home.

as much as i hate the 725(it just doesn't "feel" or sound powerful enough to me), if i could get the gun and some snappy sockets for the price of a 232 and gp sockets, i would too

Ok I'm going to make an exception, the snappy mg725 with sockets retail is almost 900. Student discount is a hair over 400. You make the call.

Many may disagree. I have always looked at buy once, spend the money. Don't buy twice and spend more than what you were going to spend in the beginning. The logic that never made since to me is to buy something that you were going to upgrade later and know that you are going to up grade. I do agree in buying used. Especially in items that you will not break. Impact sockets per say. Ratchets on the other hand, buy once and if they break then warranty. Use your discount wisely. The student discount is pretty much a no loss situation. If one buys and then decides this is not the correct path to his future then you can sell them and still come out even or somewhere there about.

It sounds like you can buy the impact and sockets at a great price. If this true then you are the spender of your own money. Look at your finances and see if that is within your budget.

Remember you are not going to buy new snappy any cheaper and still hold the receipt.

Before you get out of school and you have a job or going to have a job when you get out. Look into getting a line of credit and using the student discount to the best for your future. It seems to me that the big tool box is not the way to go in that last big get out of school buy. To many on the secondary market at less than half price. Yes you can't finance it out through snappy credit but there is always the bank. Get all your ratchets, sockets, extensions, allen sockets, torx sockets, ect.. If you don't have to use it then keep it in the wrapper and stow it so when you do need it after school.

Maybe I'm alone in this thought. But it make since to me.

The 325 and the 725 both come package deals. But only either metric or standard, so I bought the equivalent set of each when I bought the package deals in school

Snap-on student discounts are not a secret by any means. Take the truck price, subtract 50% give or take depending on the specific item.
