Its been over 15 years since I done any framing. Wanting to know of any changes or special requirement.
I know they have added some for walls with garage doors to meet shear loads.
Anything else?
My garage is going to be 20x28 my 9x8 garage door will be on a 20ft gable end with structural truss and one 36" walk in door. Any ideas on meeting shear requirements for this.

I looked at the City of Wichita website and didn't find much that was specific about framing a garage. It does say you can do your own wiring. There was a link to post and beam (pole shed) requirements, if that's something you're considering. You could try contacting them to see if they have a list of garage requirements, or maybe even a worksheet - many cities do have that sort of thing available to residents.

My SIL did similar but w/ two garage doors. He ended up w/ about 2 ft of wall between the doors and 2 ft of wall at each end. Code required him to run the LVLs all the way to the corner rather the usual triple studs under each end. He also had to ad some metal straps. Since he knew about it before hand neither was a big deal. I 'think' you will be able to build yours normally but your county permit people can give you the actual requirements.

"portal frame" is key search term for this. And I think it's required if you have less than two 4' braced panels, which my math says you will not have. Continuous header, maybe extra anchor bolts, sheathing, and more nails than usual. On your non-load bearing gable wall, I'd guess a single 2x12 header. More thought than expense.

I called and talked to a inspector and he said there is no requirement for sheer wall on garages, so I guess I'm good to go.
