Any stain experts?

Im trying to achieve a look similar to this door in this picture. I'd like to stain some interior doors and casing trim to match this. I've tried a combination of minwax stains/polyshades but still no love. I believe this may because Im trying on pine/poplar boards and maybe mahogany is required?

Not an expert but I have a local expert a short drive away.

He's matched a couple of species of pine and poplar to the same color for me and done an amazing job.

Works at a local paint store. Might have somebody similar close to you.

Poplar surely a better grain pattern for matching that. Those don't even look like mahogany?? Those might be Poplar....or cherry?

Did you try a walnut stain on some poplar?

Do you have a paint store near you like Sherwin Williams? They are usually really good at helping you out with this sort of thing. They typically have more knowledgeable people than the box store or hardware store counter help.

i'd like to know for sure if you know what species those doors are? I've seen some that are fake. that makes a huge difference. because if it is mahogany and you have pine you're essentially going to have to cover the pine to get it to a mahogany tone and get rid of the pine grain. might have to do some gel stain filling. or a sealer. then you can pick a few stains that are close and try different application and removals techniques and application methods. think of faux painting. as said above looks like a walnut coloring. good luck I don't have the patience to do that level of matching
