Any such thing as a "double square" 8 point box end wrench?

This is by all means a want, more than a need... But, now and then I work on old wood or metal working machines, and they can use a fair amount of square fasteners.

A set of 8 point double box end wrenches might come in handy now and then.
So far though, my search has been fruitless.

I don't know about full sets, but I do know that Craftsman used to make a Ford "brake adjustment wrench" that was a double box 8pt in I believe 7/16 and 1/2" size. Beyond that I have never seen any others. You could probably find one of the older Craftsman ones on Ebay.

Spline is a good idea. I've wondered how well they work of square drive stuff, but I forgot all about them posting this.

I'll keep an eye out for one of those Ford wrenches too. Limited... but still might come in handy.
It's not as if there's really that many common square sizes anyway.

Pliers wrench. Ever since I got one I don't use any kind of wrench or socket on squares. I have some universal/spline wrenches and they don't do bad but nah. Pliers wrench is still the right answer.

I think it's because they have fewer corners at a sharper angle, but nearly all square drive stuff I come across is not really square anymore anyway. I'm sure whoever worked on/destroyed it previous to me isn't the only cause either. Kind of feel like a wrench wouldn't be as tight as you'd want it to be for these.

Really? Any idea when they were offered by Craftsman? I'd like to have one.

I've seen them, but I've never seen any that looked like they were made post WW2.

I know a bit about square fasteners, old tractors are my hobby. I absolutely love my Proto spline ratcheting. (The black imports, can't afford the USA I-beam ones.)

I was looking around for fun and I guess there are a number of different companies that have made a ford brake 7/16"-1/2" 8pt wrench. I found a Duro-Chrome on Alloy Artifacts, a Mac, Herbrand, Chrome X, Blue Point 4pt version, and a Lectrolite in the completed Ebay listings, and also a Craftsman (just like the one I have seen in the past) in an active listing on Ebay (not mine). I didn't see any newer ones.

I am assuming that you are aware that 8-point sockets are available but you're just interested in wrenches.

Craftsman makes them along with others. I have a Propoint sockets and they work well.

Although you said you wanted wrenches , if you are dealing with actual square fasteners I would get a set of female pipe plug sockets . got mine from sunex , very good product.

If you're okay with sockets there is a lot out there, especially in vintage sets. I bought this duro 1/2" set for 40 bucks and it came with all the squares

No, do not use 12 point, a pipe wrench, or an adjustable on a square. The next guy to work on it will frustrated with you... I had to file the edges square on a pipe plug today before I could remove it because someone had destroyed it with the wrong tool and I couldn't get a socket on it.

15mm Flank Drive 12pt works fine on a 1/2" square and 11mm FD on a 3/8" square - but only for low torque - like Ruger said at high torque 12pt will ruin the fastener.

i have one made by proto. it looks just like a proto pebble line wrench with a double square box end rather than an open end.

I just checked mine, it's a Herbrand 2332. Seems heftier than I'd think you'd need for brake adjustment, much beefier than a regular 12 point would be. 8 point double square box ends like the others.

I work on older machines and I know what you mean! You're always turning square shafts!

Afraid I've never had much luck finding box end wrenches! Certainly nothing approaching a set! Open Enders work fine of course, but I usually just use a double square socket with a sliding T instead of a wrench!

I've got a big old Britool set that includes these, but Snap On offer a great range new!

1st thing that came to mind were the lathe tools by Armstrong and ACE. They are kind of beefy with short handles but there should be lots on ebay under machine tools.
