I want some sort of lantern that I can use to sit down on a work surface or the ground and flood the whole area with light, just like an ordinary lantern would. I would prefer one that is LED for the better battery life. Any suggestions on brands, models, etc?

I have that one. I'm very happy with it, for the $20 sale price I got it for.
I'd be happier, if it worked with removable lithium batteries, but still, it's not half bad.

Unfortunately though, it still gives a smaller area of light than a plug in trouble light, but as a battery light goes, it is pretty good.

Get one the CFL types that looks like a standard camping gas lantern. Those put out a fair amount of light. A set of batteries should be good for a full nights use. I got mine from costco, don't remember the brand (might have been GE?)

Hmm, yea I have been considering an LED trouble light but I am just not ready to jump on one yet. I want something that's non-directional like this:

http://www.cabelas.com/lanterns-coleman-cpx-rugged-led-lantern-1.shtml?WT.tsrc=CSE&WT.mc_id=GoogleProductAds&WT.z_mc_id1=03361361&rid=40&mr:trackingCode=166B2FC4-6BB6-E111-8DC4-001B21631C34&mr:referralID=NA&mr:adType=pla&mr:ad=21046041071&mr:keyword=&mr:match=&mr:filter=22549717391

I don't think I want a CFL. I don't totally trust them from a durability standpoint. I have dropped my plastic trouble-light with U-shaped bulbs a few times, but I'm still not 100% sold.

I highly recommend this one: Rayovac Sportsmans LED Lantern

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0018S4XIS/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
I've been reading a lot of good things about that one /\ recently and plan to pick one up soon. Another one I have that works well and it probably better suited for your purpose is the Energizer Weather Ready Folding Area Lantern seen here http://www.amazon.com/Energizer-Weather-Ready-Folding-Lantern/dp/B001D937SY/ref=sr_1_4?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1352428336&sr=1-4&keywords=coleman+led+latern

Another one that is good for smaller spaces is the Coleman High-Tech LED Mini Lantern. Seen here http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-3AA-High-Tech-Mini-Lantern/dp/B00339C2VA

If you have one in the area I've found the best place to find all of these models at a good price is Meijer (even though they are not all listed on their website)

I saw a battery-operated LED lantern the other day at Costco that was essentially four puck lights arranged on a camp lantern-type frame. Each puck could be controlled individually and could also be removed from the base to use as a work light or flashlight. I don't recall if it used regular replaceable batteries or not. I just looked on their website and could not find this item, so it might only be in stores.

It seemed interesting because it would be versatile.
