I have a very good friend that has a pendant that she is very attached to for many years and it broke. It appears to be some sort of pot metal but I don't know for sure as I have very little experience with this stuff.

Is there a way that I can fix this?

I have a friend that is in the jewelry business and he let me play with his laser welder. That would be the cats meow for fixing that. So I suggest you contact jeweler and ask if they have a laser and what the cost would be.

Pot metal melts at a very low temp. You would need a solder that melted below that temp. You could probably find that info online, but would the solder color match? I too would take it to a jeweler and ask how much to fix.

And when you take it to the jeweler, pay whatever it takes to fix it, and return it to her repaired without any discussion about cost. That way you come out as the hero instead of the zero.

If worse comes to worst, the jeweler can possibly do away with the frail loop (weak spot), and come up with some sort of a hook and chain through the top that will still leave it attractive, and not take away from it. Plus it would be stronger without the loop in it. Just another idea being tossed out there.

Maybe a dab of j.b. weld. Looks like the color would match up also... Just my first thoughts when I looked at it.

I thought that also but didn't want to risk it failing and her losing it forever. It likely wasn't an expensive piece but she has had it forever and is a BIG Mini Mouse fan.

I was thinking of something similar Kevin. A steel loop would be so much stronger.

Hey Techie I'm not far, Toronto actually. I was a jeweller for 10 years go downtown Toronto 21 Dundas Square. It's a building at the corner of Dundas and Victoria st. speak to the guy at the front desk and he'll send you to the appropriate jeweller. That building is full of setters, custom designers, stone dealers, they even have a refinery. I would recommend someone personally but I've been out of the biz for 12 years now. It will need to be soldered. Good luck brother...GM

Thanks Murdoch, That might be the route that I need to take with it. Once I find out if a new one would fit the bill for her, I will follow up.

Are there any makers marks or issue numbers on the back that you would like to maintain from a collectors standpoint? Otherwise another option is to make a thin sheetmetal backing out of silver or even stainless with a loop attached and glue it to the back. This would be strong and functional and if done right would not detract to much from the look. It is also reversible and can be removed if you want to return it to its former state.
