So I find myself needing a perfectly cut stencil for paint work quite often and have considered buy a small vinyl plotter to keep things in house.

Any guys here have any experience with the smaller machines?

48" and narrower would be ideal size. Doesn't have to handle thick material, just simple vinyl masks to spray with.

I have a 48" US Cutter brand Roland Compatible... Can handle about anything, I cut Blast Masks with it and generally cut powder coat masks for Stainless Tumblers.

The low end machines are surprisingly cheap and do a pretty good job. I have a Silhouette cameo that does 12"x 12" squares but will cut without a mat from a 12" wide roll if needed. I haven't had a need for anything larger but a roll cutter will give you more flexibility in the future. I went with the Cameo because I wanted my wife to be able to run it and it looked like it had some pretty simple software. She loves it and I get to use it when I need to mask something.
