I see many posts on guys putting their air compressors outside so they don't have to listen to them. I love the sound of that thing. Its only a Quincy QT-5 but it's music to my ears. It sounds like pure power ready to crank off a stuck bolt, or blast some air at something. Also, it used to keep my mother in law out of the garage because she was scared of the blue monster in the corner. Anybody else feel the same way??

I'm the same way. Both of my compressors run quietly enough that I don't mind having them right in the garage with me. Over the years I've found that most oil filled compressors have a nice thumping sound to them so they don't annoy me. The oilless compressors are another thing. They simply scream.

Sorry - I'd love to get mine outside, but then it would bother the neighbours.... I hate the sound SO MUCH, I turn it off as soon as it fills so I won't have to hear it kick in. My pet-peave is to have to fill a 60 gallon tank just to lower the damn lift. I gotta make one of them bottles that captures air for the lift.

Too annoying and also takes up space for nothing. I only have a 24x26 garage, so all the non-essential stuff is in other places, mostly in the yet to be built shed haha!

I hate my big compressor, but I love to hear this little girl run. She stays out in the shed with the lawn mowers and stuff.

I have a two-stage, 80 gallon Sanborn that's going on 15 years old. Where I used to live, it was in a seperate room...now it's in the garage with me. Yep..it's loud.

So..I got an intake muffler from Grainger that looks like a small car air filter. That helped. Next, I got an inline intake muffler from Ingersol-Rand that reminds me of an older Cherry Bomb car muffler. (Except it's blue)

I'll have to take a pic to post, but the IR is attached to the intake of the compressor...then the other muffler is attached to the end.

End result...BIG improvement. Now it;s more than tolerable..and I don;t mind it running.

I had the basic 33 gal 3 hp Sears oil-less for years, and boy that sucker was annoying.

Now I have a nice big Champion that is downright pleasant to listen to. You can actually stand next to it and talk.

Really depends on the compressor. I have worked next to big ones that made an almost cool sound of thunk, thunk, thunk. You could talk over it, didn't bother anyone.
Then I have heard them that would drive you flippin nuts.
My latest is noisy, annoying, even with sound proofing around it, a custom air intake and lots of insulation.

Some are very much more annoying than others.

Mine didn't used to bug me, but it gets more annoying every time I turn it on.

Oil-filled 30 gallon here, gotta find a way to quiet it down. It's in the corner of the garage with me.

You guys that think they're not bad are likely hard of hearing....you should check that - seriously!

I only have a small 5 gallon for my garage, so there's not really a point in building a shed for it no matter how annoying it can get. On the other hand, my father's (passed down from his dad) compressor in his shop makes a nice soft burble that makes me totally nostalgic for my childhood. It'd be a crime to silence it.

Mine will be under the stairs, trying to use that "dead" space for something. And yes it will be enclosed...I am deaf enough and do not need an air compressor finishing off my hearing.

I usually wear earphones when working in the garage so the air doesn't bother me.

But the space issue is way higher then the sound. If I can get a large piece of gear outside and still use it all the better. As far as Mother-in-laws I just select music that she wouldn't like.
