Just throwing out a last ditch effort in finding some handle info before I make my new one.

If you have a 6" Reed, I would love to know

1. Handle dia.
2. Handle Length
3. Handle Balls on end dia.

Thanks!

I have a 206 with the 2127008 patent number.
The handle bar is about 7/8" and slides nicely in the hole in the screw, not too sloppy. I would guess about .020 or so under the hole size.
The balls are twice the diameter of the screw, or about 1~3/4 dia. (That may be a common 'rule of thumb' for most of the better vises.)
The balls on mine are a little loose so that they will revolve a little. I don't know if that is the original intent, but look at the patent for afixing the balls. It may be that is the way it is supposed to be.

My McMaster book 108 only shows plain steel balls up to one inch. You may have to make them yourself, or get them made. Maybe you can dig up a couple. Otherwise, do you know any machinists who owe you a favor?

You likely will end up tapping a hole, say 5/8 or 3/4, in a ball and threading the ends of the handle bar. When you are ready for final assembly, you might loc-tite the threads and hope for the best.

The handle bar itself is about 14" between the balls, so a little longer to accommodate the threaded ends would be necessary.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Awesome guys thanks a lot!

So after seeing that 406-A I am wondering what the difference is between

106
206
306
406-A

I 'think'

106 non swivel base
206 swivel base
306 (what I have) non swivel base, swivel jaw
406-A looks from pic like swivel base with bottom missing, swivel jaw

So what do you guys think, have I cracked the code?

Interesting.

My '20's vintage Reed #32 (4.25" Combo vise, precursor to the 2CA) has a handle that's exactly 3/4" and the balls are about 1 9/16". Just over twice the handle diameter. Overall length is 13.5".

Don't feel like disassembling the vise or contorting myself to measure the screw.

I wonder if he meant 2x the dia of the handle not the screw. My 6" screw is easily 1"+ and the hole for the handle is not that big.

I think you may have! My 406-A originally had a swivel base but didn't come with it when I bought it. I just mounted it stationary.

Are you still by some chance looking for the handle specs? My 306 has a welded-on ball on one end, and what's left of the weld for the other handle end keeping the handle from dropping onto the floor. Even with the mods, I have no reason to believe it's not original.

Ahh, the perfect zombie thread to resurrect. In the 2022 Garage Sale thread, I bought a Reed 106 with a hugely long pipe handle, too small diameter, so I was looking for specs on what I need to rebuild it too. This was Only the fourth thread I had to read thru to get the answer. And in another thread, @KMScott recommended 1144 steel for the handle, so two items down. Now just need to find the right diameter steel balls, also in this post, and finally, the skills to execute this work. Check this space, or the main vise thread, in a year or two, see if I’ve finished it yet. 🤨. Need to strip off the $hit paint job currently on there, too.

So, are these alloy steel balls going to be a bear to work with? Only ones OnlineMetals.com seems to carry in that size. McMaster has the same one for more $. Saw a project where someone used shaft collars instead of balls, might consider that, black oxide might be sharp, or chrome. And less skill required.

Thanks all, and don’t hate too much on zombies, at least the thread variety.
