Hello everyone, I'm in the market for a cordless 1/2" impact. As much as I'd love the new brushless DeWalt 1/2" impact I can't justify the almost $500 for an electric impact for the home shop. I was looking around and saw that Harbor Freight has an 18V impact. Does anyone have this impact? If so what kind of luck have you had with it? I have read the reviews on HF's website, most are positive but I'd like to hear from an unbiased group. Thank you

You're in luck, there are no biases or strongly held opinions for or against Harbor Freight tools here on GJ.

Kidding aside, when evaluating a tool based on reviews, it's helpful to consider who the buyers are.

I have the corded version, and it works well. There are reviews on YouTube that should shed some better light on the cordless type.

I got one as a gift for Christmas this last year.. I have used it three times for tire rotations on my vehicles. No issues, it zipped 4 tires off torqued at 80 lbs. It seems to have plenty of zip.. But it is not in the same class as a Snap on.. Which I have used.. I bought a extra battery for 12 ish dollars with a coupon for a spare. Hope this helps..

I also have the corded HF it works great too no issues.

I will say I just bought the Dewalt DCF899 from a guy on Craigslist for $200 and it is amazing. They go for $220 online plus a battery and charger if you don't have one which is another $50 or so on Ebay. If you are really going to use it on a day to day basis, I'd recommend something better than the HF. I'd go with Craftsman or even Ryobi over HF. I've seen the 19.2 Craftsman impact in action and it works great.

CPO has some 1/2" impact wrenches for about $119-$140 or so in most brands -- DeWalt, Bosch, Milwaukee. In case you already have batteries for those platforms.

http://www.cpooutlets.com/dewalt-dw059hb-18v-cordless-1-2-in--impact-wrench-with-hog-ring-anvil--bare-tool-/dewndw059hb,default,pd.html?start=6&q=1%2f2%20impact&pmin=0&pmax=150&prefn1=condition&prefv1=new&prefn2=taxonomyAddress&prefv2=Impact%20Drivers%20and%20Wrenches

Not saying the HF tool is necessarily bad, but I'd rather personally stick to nicer, more proven brands.

For ten bucks more, you can get the Craftsman heavy duty, with a Lion batt and charger. I have one, one of my favorite tools. Powerful and well built. Easily removed finish mower blade bolts, I could not budge with cheater/breaker bar.

I went with it since i already had Cman 19.2v cordless tools and love them, so no need for more oddball batteries and chargers.

The HF is probably fine, (as is most of their stuff) just seems pricey for something with a Nicad battery. You do get the 20% coupon though. :)

Do you already have cordless drills, etc. that may have interchangeable batteries?

I have an 18v 1/4 impact driver from HF that works fine. It's heavy, underpowered, clumsy, and weak compared to name brand impacts. I never had a problem with it though.

I have it and it hits hard. It comes with a different battery than the other 18v tools in the line. It's a pretty good battery, but you can only get it when you buy the impact wrench kit. Highstar makes it. Not worth the money when you consider which battery platform you will be saddled with.
