Anybody have a Shop Smith?

I have an original Shopsmith in the garage my dad gave me. It was his uncle's. It runs but has not been in real operation for a long time. It's a bit rough. Might be a cool gift to restore and give him for Christmas.

Would love to learn more about them and if anyone nerds out on them. I know they were introduced as a tool to "do it all" regarding wood working. Perhaps to save space and money on buying indivual tools (table saw, drill press, sander, lathe). Here's the one I have - it's a picture of a restored one not my actual one.

If that link does not work for you, get into the Yahoo Groups and search for SSusers. It seems to be the most active forum in there.
Also search for Shopsmith, you will find several others that but they don't have very many members and aren't as active as the SSusers group.

There are also many posts about Shopsmith in various woodworking forums, try searching on lumberjocks.com or sawmillcreek.org

My GF's grand-dad had one. He had many attachments for it and used it a lot. He had a small shop in his basement, so didn't have room for dedicated machines. I always preferred to use dedicated machines instead of do-it-all machines, but one of my early mentors also had a Shop Smith and made beautiful things on it.
