so i just bought a gearwrench 13 piece 1/4 drive set of sockets from advance auto. I open it up when i get home to see that one of the sockets looked a little different. then i notice that that it has Made in USA marked on it. Then i notice it says Craftsman??? Looks like someone yanked my 5.5 mm gearwrench socket and replaced it with a 5mm cman! So has anyone else had this happen??? how often do you use a 5.5mm socket? im asking because its 20 something minutes back it was just on my way tonight and im wondering if i should even bother to worry about it since i never recall needing one.

A lot of little trim pieces and such in Fords use 5.5 mm screws.

that's odd, did the package look like it had been opened at all? was it still shrink wrapped?

I've had doubles of one but missing another, but never another brand.
I bet if you call GearWrench they'll fix it and let you keep the CMan.

I bought a set of gearwrench ratcheting flex head x-beam wrenches (that's a mouthful) and when I opened it up the 3/4 was a MATCO! Looks like gearwrench is making tools for a bunch of others!

I was thinking the same thing abou the retailer thinking im lying. but what kind of since would it make to lie to get them to replace my set with the correct sockets. When i have a reciept package and all and would be returning it within a day. Who would do that for an extra free 5.5 socket lol. Hopefully they dont give me a hard time.

Also it came on one of those packages wherer teh cardboard slides in teh plastic with the sockets inside so someone could have very easily did a switcheroo on it before i got it.

Does Gearwrench make Craftsman? if they do it may just be a packaging mixup

Danahar makes both CM and GW. But one factory is in Taiwan the other is here.

It still could have happened at Danaher if they package the Gearwrench set here in the same facility that they pack Craftsman. I would call Gearwrench customer service, they might just send you the socket. BTW- I got a NAPA extension in a factory sealed Craftsman socket set.

Not quite the same, but I bought two sets of 3/8 metric 6 point socket sets from Craftsman (albeit on the same day.) The 10mm on both were 12 point. I thought about returning them. The Sears near me is great about that sort of thing, but it just wasn't a big enough deal for me to get around to it. When you're producing a bajillion of anything every day, I guess stuff falls through the cracks once in a while.

I run across 5.5mm sockets on cars all the time. It annoys me that so many socket sets skip that size. I have to add them to my expensive socket sets from cheap ones just so I know I have it.

As for the switch, I've bought a DVD from Best Buy once that was empty inside (someone re-shrink wrapped it and returned it!). It really ***** because what store would ever believe me?

Same probably goes for you too. Some jerk probably switched out a cheaper craftsman set to get past the return guys who don't look that closely, and you get stuck with them.

do you want a different set because it is craftsman or because it is a different size, if it is because of the size, take the set back to where you bought it and exchange it, if it is because of the brand, use it until it breaks and warranty it at sears.

Last Sunday I bought a $19.99 craftsman 1/4" drive mm socket set at Kmart to complete my s-k/craftsman 1/4" drive sockets.
The 13mm was a 3/8" drive instead of 1/4" drive. I Returned within the same day to exchange the correct socket from another set. I also made sure the ratchet was good too before I left. I think they will end up returning the last socket set back to where the sets gets packaged

But i never had a different brand mixed in yet lol
