i have some of this old junk taking up space that has come from cleaning out old garages hardly ever use them, just lend them to the neighbors when they want to borrow them cause i couldnt care less about them theyre not as nice as a full polish wrench from beta or snap on, so why would i want them?

i have enough junk taking up space i dont go looking for more

I don't turn wrenches for a living anymore but I did for a lot of years so I have all the working tools I need.
I love hunting old tools. I collect mainly Plomb but I'll buy anything that catches my eye if the price is right.
It's much more fun buying a tool that you want then it is buying one that you have to have to make a buck.

I don't ever buy any used handtools. It's too much of a pain digging through a toolbox looking for a certain socket when I can open my newer sockets sets in the molded plastic and find what I need within a half of a second. I think the only older things I would buy would be jack stands, compressors, floor jacks etc. Only If I found them for pennies on the dollar.

I do enjoy buying rare/easily swappable parts at the junkyard to make profit of.

Not really into the old tools here. Prefer newer stuff. I do have some old tools, but end up replacing them. Of course, I keep anything that was owned by my Grandpa or Dad.

I am sure that you are familiar with the concept of value being completely relative for non-essential i.e. non life-sustaining products. A pacemaker is "valuable,'" whereas a Blackhawk set might only be somewhat "desirable" to certain folks.

As another example, one person might find an old Ram to be desirable, whereas others would find it to be scrap value at best :lol_hitti

Scout and Bull,
Are you guys saying that old Blackhawk stuff is valuable? I have an old Blackhawk ratchet and socket set from my grandfather or great grandfather, where the ratchet looks like two pieces of sheet metal and you push the 1/2" square drive piece through to the other side to change directions. It's what I use in the junkyard. Maybe I should see about putting it on Ebay.
Edit: I just checked and it is pretty much worthless. Oh well.

This thread has really harshed my buzz.

I was chuffed to find two more of these old flare nut wrenches to add to the set I've been working on for 2 years. But now, I realize they are just worthless old ****. Look at them, they don't even quite match, so disgusting, I can no longer bear to look upon them. So I tossed them in the trash can, and am off to Harbor Freight to get me some NEW, GOOD flare nut wrenches.

Thanks for getting my mind right, fellas. No more crappy old tools for me!

Glad you threw those out, Bolster. They wouldn't even be accepted at my facility, the address for which I posted above, due to the lack of rust and corrosion.

Hopefully, they can make a few good soup cans from them.

Tools were, and now and always will be made to use,not collect for value.
Sorry all of you rusty old tool collectors.
Just like old cars, they were never built to be put in a garage to look at.They were built to be driven.

Us "rusty tool collectors" don't collect them for value, or to put them on a shelf! We collect them because they appeal to us, and we actually use the damn things!

I'm always on the lookout for certain old tools. I work on a lot of antique tractors and they just don't make tools designed for flathead motors anymore. Any old specialty tools get my immediate attention. It's always fun to find a real gem that nobody has a clue what it is so they let it go for pennies. Just bought a KR wilson valve guide puller for $1.00
I buy a lot of older hand tools because the quality is better than newer, but not to collect i plan on using it.

Ditto that. Any of my "collectables" see regular use. No, that's not true. I have one partial set of wrenches that only sit in a box. All the others are in play.

Those flare nuts get more use than you'd imagine. That's why you see a few smidgeons of dirt on them.

Bchee, I might just take you up on your advice to get new Cmans...but I'd insist they sit in a corner and "age" for several decades before use.

I didnt start ******** garage sale/flea marketing for tools before i started crusing GJ several times thruout the day. learned lots of tools i though were "junk" were really good and ive since started 'aquiring' them trying to fill in sets. what i do buy used is OLDER =V= cman, anything SnapOn, SK mostly and anything thats too good a deal to pass up. i hit a garagesale sat and got a whole handmade wooden tool box full of bits n brace, hinsdale wrenches, old sockets, assorted "junk" for $3... couldnt pass it up. Sunday i hit an estate sale for a vintage 1/4 cman electric drill, 10 metric cman sockets, some vintage cman screwdrivers, wrenches etc for $10.... couldnt pass it up :) most of the older **** doesnt get used but its too good to toss and has little if any value here once you factor in shipping

I have nearly 5000 posts on GJ, less than a handful in the tools section.....tools to me are just things I use to make other stuff!

But I've commented on this before and Bull enlightened me so much so that I can now better appreciate collecting old tools. I have some from my Dad too - they sit in the bottom drawer...

That is true but I fail to see why my use should be confined to whatever the intended use for an item was.

@Bolster. Are you trying to trick us? Sumtin' going on here... ;)

It's cool that you were able to put together a set, but there are those, like me, who've not got the time and energy to wait 2+ years to scrounge these things up. Esp. in an area with few and/or lousy and/or overpriced flea markets.

If I need a tool, I usually need it NOW, so I will go buy the tool.

I'm not really into old tools, I'm into whatever tools I can find that will fit my budget, fit my needs and fit the level of quality I like in my box.

I don't have any really old tools but many ratchets, wrenches and sockets in my box are probably between 20-60 years old.
