Anybody replaced the pull ******** a roll n lock?

I'll probably order one eventually but for now just want to get something attached so I can pull the cover closed. The old strap is broken right at the edge. Does the little plastic button that holds the metal piece just pop out? I kind of feel like it has to but I don't want to break it.
