Anyone actually use stubby screwdrivers?

I currently have six stubby screwdrivers acquired through various kits sitting in my toolbox. I have never used one, not a single time. Is there some hidden use for these? Or do they simply make a 4 piece screwdriver set a 6 piece screwdriver set.

occasionally usually inside a vehicle when working under a dash.

I avoid it like the plaque though, nothing good comes from shorty screwdrivers

Stubby's are quite handy especially if you do any work under a dash. I have a few myself from different set's and believe me when you do come across a job where you need one you be glad to have hung on to them.

I use them fairly regularly. I even have a #2 Phillips that is barely 1-1/2" long total length, and have been known to use a Chapman bit ratchet and a bit to get into really snug quarters.

My 20 year old Craftsman Pro stubby is my most used screwdriver. I don 't know why I like it so much but I do. I wish I could get the Wera in stubby.

Wera makes stubby screwdrivers. I have a phillips #2 and 1/4 slotted in their stubby design.

And by the way, I do use my stubbies and quite frequently actually. They've found use numerous times on electrical equipment I've worked on and in our school's fabrication shop.

I have a stubby ratcheting SO screwdriver that I use a lot for various jobs that are in cramped spaces. As far as using regular non-ratcheting stubby screwdrivers, they don't get used often.

Under the dash, and sometimes on older engines while tuning a carburetor. One of these days, I'll get a stubby ratcheting screwdriver.

Add me to the list; I carry a #2 phillips stubby in the regular tool bag. I don't use it every day like my normal #2, but working on yachts means lots of tight spots and sometimes that's the only way to get to the fastener.

I have used them to work on distributors on older tractors. Without a stubby screw driver you never could change the points in some of them!

I use them every so often, but I like my S-O ratcheting one better (when it fits, it's a bit longer then a fixed blade).

I use mine all the time in tight quarters.
I bought my Fuller-USA stubbies when I was a teenager back in the 60's.

I use my Phillips #2 stubby every once in a blue moon at work. Ussually I use a Blue Point bit ratchet I have for cramped quarters jobs. I don't even have a stubby flat blade in my toolbox. It is with my gun stuff because the only use I have found for it is adjusting rifle scopes.

I'm a fan of the Klein stubby screwdrivers, although they've seen only a handful of uses since I bought them. The handle style and the rubber grip make a noticeable difference compared to other stubbies I've used before.

I was in the airplane business over 35 years ago (wow ... I just realized is was more like 37) and was essentially a mechanics helper amongst other things. Because of the tight spaces, the mechanics were using the stubbies quite often.

Working on my race car ... I think I've only used the stubby a few times. Under the dash, whatever tools you're using can never besmall enough.

I bought a couple sets of these on a whim at HF for like 49 cents each and gave them to some of my mechanic friends, and they use them every day.

I bought 2 stubby screwdrivers at Sears for something like $0.50 each. Haven't used them. It was an impulse buy because I thought they might be fantastic for working on wheelchairs in my workshop. Haven't found a use for them at the moment.

I've found a 1/4" flex driver and a good ratcheting off-set screwdriver completely replaces stubby screwdrivers.

How are the tips holding up?

Guys still using the same ones a year or so later. They are just typical 1/4 hex bits with a molded plastic "handle", so maybe the bit could be replaced.

Where they seem to be handy is when you can't see the screw, reach in blind and feel around, find the screw and the driver is so small easy to put it on the screw and apply a modest amount of torque with one hand. With a flex you need a finder hand to guide and another to turn and that can end up looking like playing twister.

Buried hose clamps with a round head blade drive, almost no other easy way to put one on or remove.

I have found myself using mine all the time, removing guards off of grinders to change wheels, taking panels off of machines to check something or whatever. I use my normal length screwdrivers alot aswell but I just seem to be grabing my stubby ones for alot of those little jobs.

I use a stubby Phillips periodically, I can't recall the last time I used a stubby slotted screwdriver.

On the other hand, I use the shorter (I don't call them stubby, even though the packaging did, they're a good inch or two longer than a normal stubby screwdriver) Craftsman Professional screwdrivers all the time. They're just a perfect length for most jobs, they're not too short, but not long enough that they get wobbly if you have to start putting some pressure on them.

There's a lot of electrical equipment that I work on where they're required due to clearance/access issues. I also tend to use them when I'm working with nylon fasteners, as they work better at holding the screw in place than a long screw driver.

I like to have one or two lying on my workbench because they don't take up much room. They're handing for opening up cans of paint, wax, etc.

Vintage only! (I just picked up a couple yesterday at a barn sale off Fairfield in Wauconda.)
