I have a wooden sign that will go outside the house. But I want the lettering/graphics to be seen when people drive up at night. My thought would be to fill in these graphics with some kind of paint that will reflect a car's headlights and then polyurethane the whole sign.

Has anyone done something like this before? Any recommendations on paint that will reflect well? The lettering have some tight corners so I will be applying this with a brush.

Many times the reflective material is applied after the paint film -- as in tiny glass bead retroreflectors applied to highway paint immediately after the paint is laid down. Keeping the reflective bead bound to the film but not so encapsulated that it doesn't interact with incident light is key.

I've seen the same thing done on routed wooden signs, as in our National Parks.

I'm sure one can buy glass microbead reflective material online -- probably Amazon, for that matter.

It might work better to scatter the reflective beads on top of the PU, rather than underneath.

Is this something you could get the reflective tape that is used for trailers, signs etc and cut the letters out, then spray clear coat over the top? Google search shows some that can be used on a Cricut(cnc controlled drag knife) so should cut by hand with a utility knife/xacto blade easily enough.
