Just wanted to touch base with anyone that has built their own block garage or first floor out of block. In process of building a 24W by 28D garage. 9 ft block wall on first floor and then full 8 ft 2nd story with scissor trusses. This will be my wifes studio.

Are you going to build it yourself? I used to work as a laborer for a Mason years ago. Although we didnt do a lot of block work, it was tough, back breaking work. Not impossible to do by yourself though.

Why do you prefer blocks on the first story as opposed to standard stick built?

I have a two story shop. I hired a block layer but we did absolutely everything else. My first level is block because it's fully underground, and there is a drive-on 2nd floor that is concrete. It costs a lot more than framing, but I needed it.

An added benefit is that my shop has turned out to stay temperate all the time. Without heating or cooling it's always comfortable. I run a dehumidifier in the underground part.

With block walls, do they have to be filled or is that just an added strength component? Not going to be able to get concrete truck back there again as we already redid the drive that was destroyed during the footer, foundation, and pad installation. The drive had become a safety issue. 99% sure I will hire a block layer if I go with that

That would depend on design, code etc. I had them grout mine solid on the front wall where the roll up doors are and we tied the lintels in to the wall with rebar. I did an addition on my shop years ago and we grouted a section solid as it was going to carry a beam to support a flat roof. I built a 30 x 40 shop when I was about 20 and we put 2 pilasters in the 40 foot wall. I love a block building myself. As firebirdparts said they are easier to maintain the temperature are great for a welding shop and myself I am 60 years old and have been in one since the day I was born so I am kinda parcel to them.

Proper steel and filling would be best.
