Looking for some inspiration for some floor to ceiling cab designs for the new garage. I'd like to do 8' tall cabinets on 3" pipe feet... but I need some designs. I was considering plywood framed shelves, but I think I want everything behind doors.

Anyone done something similar?

Who says you can't put doors on plywood frames shelves? Most wood cabinets are just a box with doors that may or may not have shelves inside.

On my dads old shop we built one entire wall (24') of shelves out of plywood and 2x4s. Then in front of that we attached two barn door tracks. We hung six 4x8 sheets of finished plywood from the tracks. kept alot of dust off the junk

c_mccann's cabinets are great.

A few things to consider, in making a plan: the kinds of things you want to store high up are going to be different than the things you want easy access to on a regular basis. The box for the things you need access to infrequently doesn't have to be as durable or easy-to-use as the one for the stuff that you grab regularly. A cabinet down low eats up the floor space you use. But above normal human height, you can make the cabinets deeper without it eating into your useable space.

I ended up having one type of cabinet above 72" and another down below.

You mention 3" legs. I cut the legs off of my second-hand cabinets. As I see it, it's storage space you can't use, and it's an invitation for dirt and other stuff to get underneath the cabinets. But if flooding is possible, it makes a lot of sense.

Frisco -

I just finished these:

While not floor to ceiling, they are close and do have feet on the front.

A couple of things to think about (some, I didn't realize until after they were built):

- I love the look of floor to ceiling, but the 6'' I have on top is GREAT for storing long items I otherwise have no place for.

- I have fixed shelving, the other post has adjustable shelves...that would be a bit nicer. You may want at least one fixed to add strength to the box.

- I lagged a ledger in at the bottom (on the wall) - the cabinets sit on that, the front feet are really just for extra support - they almost aren't needed. (but they were only $4 from rockler - with a #400lb rating each.

I'm REALLY happy to have things behind doors - huge benefit. Good luck with your project
