Done!

If you mean, tax payers are paying the contracts that these companies are competing for, then yes. Dont see how that means price isnt an issue since more expensive tools = less money leftover to pay workers and profit from.

thought you meant the government was paying for the tools, i mean when the gov pays, they dont care about the cost too much, because they jack up my taxes to get it paid for.

i pay a lot of money to live where i live, so i can walk my block without getting mugged, or my home broken into, not saying it isn't possible, just saying it isnt likely. when you pay about 20 grand to live in your own house(that you pay for too)a year, you watch every dime the government charges you on top of what is already paid.

many companies and unions all over the US practically require their guys to buy and use only USA made tools, unless no other options are available reasonably. not to mention that the other workers will harrass the hell out of you if you show up with chinese pouches full of chinese tools.. you learn quickly that if you want a job here in the US, you better damn well support your fellow americans by keeping their jobs alive here.

people not caring "as long as it gets the job done" is the exact reason we are having these problems, and in turn, these discussions right now. it does matter if the tool is made in china, even if it is just as functional. there is so much more to the big picture... so many people think like you, and that is a big problem.

i wish more people, and companies would have such requirements to an extent. to use US sourced products of all types when its feasible. the more they do, they better the pricing and availability will get on some of these products. the good thing is that USA made tools are still available and fairly reasonably priced, at least for the time being.

As I said earlier, I could write about this for days...but here's some food for thought...how about the US investor who wants the highest return on his stock? Sometimes the best way to do that is to ship production offshore. Now you get into who is more important...the investor or the employee...I am not saying what's right or wrong here, but there are two sides to every coin. I'll leave it at that.

See my previous point...You can not legislate morality or greed.

Giving the investor the highest return on his investment is always best. Look at how the Netherlands and Venice are still world powers immune to invasion, and how the American colonies are still part of the British Commonwealth. :headscrat

sometimes, investors also care about there own economy and the fellow american.... its probably not the most common scenario, but im sure some do.

there are pros and cons to every business decision... weighing those and taking into account the general good of mankind, and fellow countrymen are not as important nowadays.... when money is the only consideration, and especially when money RIGHT NOW is the only consideration, economies fall to pieces and markets turn to ****.

why does channellock or any other company choose to stay USA? they surely could make more money if they cheapened and outsourced.

how about the US investor who wants the highest return on his stock, but also has a conscience?

From CNN

"Between 1993 and 2011, the top 1% of America's earners saw their income soar by 58%, while everyone else only got a 6% bump."

Hmm...

And a little lighter take on it from the movie Tommy Boy (awesome movie!)

Ray Zalinsky: Truth is, I make car parts for the American working man because I'm a hell of a salesman and he doesn't know any better.

It is commonly called capitalism, isn't it?

all the profits head back to japan, Theres alot more to building a car than just a assembly plant, before the first car rolls down the line theres minimum 5 years of work, The current 2014 corvette began development in 2007

Eh, this depends on the company. Toyota in particular has invested quite heavily into manufacturing in the USA which is why their vehicles have some of the highest USA content available. Plus with most of the Japanese auto manufacturers many of those dollars are re-invested into the North American market in one form or another, whether it be marketing, expanding operations, or R&D, since we're their largest and most profitable.

Add me to the list.
Basically the same sort of those things things ,you fellas railed at,occurred here in Oz and also Britain.

It's gotta be the same bunch of advertising mumbies because they used the same formula of saluting the nation's Tradesmen. What an insult to tradespeople and the standards most of them have, to depict alleged tradespeople performing a range of very poor work practices that would see their asses kicked at training college or at work.

Wow! they teed up sausage sizzles all over the country at local tool retailers on a Friday of all days to thank the Tradies of the Nation.:dunno:

This was on this past Friday 20th, and most real tradesmen responded by not taking time off work for a free sausage Lol .

The whole fiasco speak volumes for the mental capacities of the advertising department of this company.:dunno:

I don't buy Irwin but have few real old time Vice grips made in USA and the difference is obvious. In fact before buying any tool I check the label to see where its made.

General brand was reasonable brand out here in the recent past and produced a lot of tools that interested me but I see General Tool Company have now teamed with Groz .

Groz is an Indian tool company. Some of their past offerings were pretty sad. I have noticed General/Groz co-branded made in India tools are bobbing up down here.

Damm the bean counters.

The Irwin ads are false advertising . . . . . .just like the BP (British Petroleum) TV ads are false advertising / propaganda where they claim they spent all this money in USA 'cause they're such a great company . . . . vs REAL REASON is they had WORST OIL SPILL in HISTORY in Gulf and they had to clean it up !!!

False advertisng = = = Lifelong boycott of company

The BP spill is/was one of the more disgusting things I've ever seen and impacted people far beyond the immediate cleanup.

Along those lines, it's the same reason I won't buy a GM product made after 2009.

Not in mine.

probably no one on this forum, I'm talking about guys who use tools for work, and when they get home, the tool fantasy is over. they are not on this website, we are all tool junkies with a ridiculously expensive addiction. we are like 20 -30 % of the tool using population. hence why cheap tools are widely available, and why such places such as home depot and loses, succeed , hence why when you walk into an ace or a true value, they have displays full of **** tools...they sell.

my local guy had a large selection of SK, then 2 years later, as people came in for a tool, the bought the Master mechanic brand over the sk because it was cheaper.

Doesn't bother me at all. In the end it's just a way to make more money...that is the goal of a business, right? My buddy's a contractor originally from Michigan and he couldn't give two rips where the tool was made as long as it works.

Using lead based paint in children's toys is also a way to make more money, doesn't make it right in my book.

Now an ad campaign such as this isn't morally wrong but they still are talking to you like you are an idiot.

Almost as shameful as the fact that Budweiser is allowed to advertise their rice based, vaguely alcoholic beverage as beer!!! :spit:

Budweiser, Miller, Coors. . .you name it. . .its false advertising. What they sell is NOT beer by any standard. Beer should not have propylene glycol, Calcium Disodium EDTA, anything ending in “sulfite” like sodium metabisulfite, Heptylparaben, isinglass or any other awesome chemicals. The corn syrup and rice are just the tip of the iceberg with the Corporate Beer crowd. . .

Why can't we just toss some barley, water, hops, and yeast in keg and be done with it?

Corporate Beer *****

Not in mine.

Does your name reflect your career choice? Quality USA made tools for fixing Korean cars? Seems a little ironic that you post in this thread, no?

The Sonic commercials with the 2 weird guys sitting in a car outside the place ****. Just getting in my ***** of the day.. carry on

I just want a big truck to run them both over. I'd be happy. :Gun1::willy_nil

Thus ends my contribution to yet another GJ Dead Horse thread. . . :lol_hitti

Hate to burst the bubble and honestly sad to say it, but very little of Channelock's products are US made. Most that Ive seen are China/Taiwan today.

Maybe its just me, but it seems to me that there is a sort of "cottage" industry focusing on US manufacturing today, and there are lots of folks here and elsewhere willing to spend a bit more to get higher quality items from a domestic manufacturer. Speaking for myself, in the last year Ive bought a ton of kitchen goods/gadgets (cutting boards, tupperware, knives etc), furniture, and even a few garage items from this site's sponsors.

Every shop seems to have a hack like this (e.g., that would use vise grips on a milling machine) but usually not for long. Too bad the damage is usually done before he's sent down the road.

It's a poor reflection of the sensibilities of the american worker.

^^^^

this.

I agree with this.

Amazing.

At least Canada and Germany have a high standard of living and the chances are that goods manufactured there are not made with slave, or near slave labor.:

Current rules mean that products can be labelled as “Made in Germany” even if more than 90 percent of the work in making them takes place in other countries. :headshake

Here's the article.

name ONE american MADE tv. Please.

There is a company assembling them in the Detroit area:

http://www.elementelectronics.com/

But, I never said anything about a TV, I was mentioning Electronics in general. Could be speakers, stereo gear...no, not the cheap stuff, but there is affordable American made electronics out there if you like quality electronics, and will spend a bit more for non-throwaway electronics.

Recently my dad returned his Made in China speakers (Koss I believe) when he found out he could the equivalent type, made in Canada by Paradigm for the same price of $500.

what, do you live in a f'ing log cabin with no electricity, the ideas and thoughts you say are true about american products, but i doubt he owns all us made electronics, and the fancy silverware, and the green toys, much like most humans, that make average money, we still have to live, therefore we need to save where we can.

One of the issues is a huge part of the population overbuy on everything. Shopping at Wal-Mart and the dollar stores and stocking up on stuff we really don't need makes us think we 'gotta save that dollar' to buy even more **** we don't really need.

Some of us though would rather our kids have a American made $20-30 toy (i.e. toy truck) than 10 $2.00 toys made in China. Personally, my wife and I can't believe the amount of toys, and size of toy rooms our friends have, full of cheap and/or cheaply made toys, where the kid only really plays with a favourite handle full of them. Monstrous rooms, overflowing with toys...

Yes, there are cheaply made U.S. and Canadian products, and there are better made Chinese products. But I'd rather pay more money for the quality U.S. and Canadian products, then the cheaper and/or cheaply made Chinese ones.

My wife and I are getting by with our 1 yr old, but I'm sure most kids until they know they are allowed to get spoiled by their parents, really don't care about the amount of toys they have... they care more about your love and time you spend with them.

Wrong...
Channellock makes all of their pliers, which are undoubtedly their primary product line, in Meadville PA.

Exactly! Jeff's right here...

Anything China/Taiwan from Channellock is their smaller "filler" line of screwdrivers and socket sets etc. These pieces are just there to get Costco/Wal-Mart consumers familiar with the Channellock brand, then buy their American made pliers, and maybe their Spain made adjustables.

Jeff probably knows the precise amount, maybe someone else, but they probably have up to 50 different models made in the U.S. That ain't too shabby...
