Anyone else bought the new super-low-profile RAF80?

I love this thing. I bought it with the set of extra-shallow sockets (8-19mm skipping 11 and 16, IIRC)

It's slimmer (or comparable) to a 1/4" ratchet and shallow socket, with much more leverage/strength from the longer 3/8" design. If this doesn't fit, you're going to be using a box wrench.

I bought the HF set of thru ratchets, looks just like the GearWrench, but feel isn't quite the same, but not bad. Really shallow I would be using the GearWrench ratcheting wrenches.

I've seen the kit & thought is was cool. If I remember correctly the kit didn't have a 19mm either.

This kinda iritates me. Snap-on tends to make sets that go up to 18mm. Sets would be more practical if they went up to 19mm. When I first started in the trade, I always had my dealer substitute a 19mm for the 18mm. Back then, the Italians were just about the only people that made stuff that used 18mm.

Handle looks like it would kill your hands under pressure. Too thin.

Of course it's too thin. That's kinda the point. It's gotta fit where a normal ratchet won't. It doesn't feel pleasant, but I often use a tool like this by snaking a prybar in and using it against something solid and the ratchet handle to initially break the fastener free anyway. If you have room for a fatter, more comfortable ratchet, you'd obviously choose that.

I discovered the fact that it stops at 18mm the day after I posted this. I'm still kind a irked about that. Since I left Volvo, I've never needed an 18mm socket... but I work on Toyotas, which means 19mm tools get a lot of use... :rolleyes:

I just noticed that Snap On lists the 19mm, 9mm and 11mm low profile sockets individually on their site. Why would they not include them in the set ??

I would spend teh extra cheddar and buy the missing sockets

Speaking of low profile,has anyone seen the little rig that the snappy dealers have to demo how the 3/8 dr dual 80's are so thin?My dealer had one on the truck last week.I picked it up wondering what it was.He was all proud showing me a dual 80 with a 10mm socket saying "You won't find another ratchet that can do this,no others will fit"I said Oh?are you sure?I passed him the gearwrench 3/8dr ratchet that was in my back pocket.It was a full 1/4" lower in profile that his dual 80.The look on his face and his reps face was priceless.I told him you shouldn't challenge someone who has over 80 ratchets.His rep even came in to the shop to check out the part of my ratchet collection that I keep in my work box.He was blown away by some of the older stuff that he hasn't seen in years.

Yeah, I have the set. I actually told my dealer to order me one, after I read about the raf80 on the site. A couple weeks later, He had a box full of the sets.

Here's another super low-profile ratchet from Snap-on (not mine):

Would you mind posting pics of the square drive of the new thin snap-on ? Is the square drive shorter or could I accomplish the same thing by using my matco and grinding down a c-man socket so it's shorter?

These sets are really nice. I just got the SAE set to match the matric set I got a while back. The ratchet is really nice. Just as an FYI they have more sockets than listed in the set. My Snappy guy was running a deal if you bought the set you get the rest of the sockets free. In each case there was 3 free sockets.

I've been trying to decide between the SO set or other options, e.g., from Mac, etc.

Note that the metric SO sockets are available as 6 or 12 point -- make sure you get the set you want! I don't seem to see a 6 point SAE set, but I may just be missing them.

A member helpfully pointed out to me that Proto makes a set that should be available for about $70 that includes 9-19 with no skips, and an SAE set 3/16-3/4 with no skips, that can be had for $60. Both of these sets are 6 point.

I am not sure, but I believe that these Protos and the Macs are the same heights as the low profile SOs. Can anyone confirm? They should work on the SO ratchet (the SO ratchet flyer specifically says it works with regular sockets) but I am not sure that the low profile SO sockets work with other ratchets (I seem to remember hearing that they do NOT).

So, to me, it seems that a cost effective way to assemble a "set" is to pick up the 2 sets of Proto sockets plus the SO ratchet.

Just some more options to cloud things a bit more :)

I have the proto metric set, I'll see about some pics tonight but i think they are just as low as the snapon. Those combined with a matco or armstrong 60 tooth ratchet should be just as shallow as the snap on set.

Out of my mind... Be back soon!
An extension for a super low profile ratchet?:headscrat

I don't get that at all, could anyone explain why you would want/need that?

I'm thinking it would be for if you have a situation where there's only a narrow area in which to swing the ratchet, but the fastener is deep inside of something. Note that the extension isn't designed to fit the super low profile sockets, but rather a regular socket.

I have the ratchet, but not the sockets. I bought the Mac sockets before the snap on ones came out. I do not regret either purchase. They are a big time saver over using a wrench.

Snap-on's web site says the thickness of a RAF80 head is 0.77 inches. I just don't see how this can be right. A F80 has a 1/2 inch thick head. What's the actual thickness of the RAF80 head? Thanks.

Including the 3/8" anvil
RAF80= 0.776"
F80= 1.006"
OK, so it looks like the website measurements include the anvil for the RAF80, but not for the F80, which is listed as having a 1/2" thick head. The RAF80 diagram makes it look like the 0.776" doesn't include the anvil, but I guess it does. Thanks.

OK i did one more measurement for the weirdo's like me.

RAF80 with Snap-on Lo-Pro Socket 19MM= 1.251"
F80 witch Regular Snap-On Socket 19MM= 1.840"

Over 1/2" difference. When compared side by side it does make a big difference.

those sockets have to accept a regular 3/8 drive ratchet. Otherwise they wouldn't fit on the rail they are on in the pic.
