Anyone else like Channellocks?

I've been picking up channellocks either at the flea market or at garage sales for a while. I gathered most of them up for a photo op yesterday. My earliest 420s have a patent number dated 1933. They are either marked Channellock or Champion DeArment.

The shank, if not the whole driver was almost certainly made by Enders? If you can't find one garage or pawn shop sailing, contact Enders for replacement tips. you can probably get then blade, Phillips or a combo...

earlier this year i bought a new pair of channellock 8" needle nose pliers. after a few non abusive uses the tip bent. i replaced them with knipex needle nose pliers and haven't had any problems with them.

I have the channellock 420, 426, and the needle nose pliers. Never had an issue with them. Just bought the blue point 8 pc pliers set which comes with a 420-sized plier, but ill still grab for the channellock first.

I have had the pair above for about 15 years and they are my go to needle nose and have never had an issue.

Just read through most of this thread...I'll never understand the fascination of collecting tools and never using them. What the hell is the point? Seems like an incredible waste of money and tools. There are very clearly two different types of people on this board

Same reason people collet stamps, coins, Beanie babies or whatever else they decide is worth collecting. They find the item class interesting, and thats enough...

At least pliers are not big and heavy like the larger vises and anvils, (or cars for that matter...)

I have all the sizes of the Channellocks. Then, I saw that Channellock also has "pump pliers". So does Knipex. Do I really need pump pliers? What are they specifically used for (and don't say "pump")? If they're for pumps, what kinds of pumps?

It's a gimmicky universal socket thingy that they eventually discontinued in the late 90's.
I'm surprised that it lasted that long.

At that time the blue rubberized grips existed but we're not standard.
Not sure when they phased out the slogan but I'd guess 70's too.

Aha! So that's where those hex shank nut drivers originated!

I wonder if they OEM'd the Xcelite hex shank 4 in 1 as well. I bought a current production model recently, but it has the conventional round shank.

I own 2 pair of channel lock pliers. My 440's have some very specific uses, and a lot of general stuff I couldn't accomplish as easily with a lesser tool (for example, they work great for compressing single piston brake calipers).

But if there is one tool in my entire collection that I would be lost without, it is the pair of 420's below. If something ever happened to these pliers, I'd go ahead and hand the rest of my tools off to my sons now, and quit wrenching. I'd loan anything else in my box to my next door neighbor, but if I was working next to somebody and he said, "lemme borrow those channellocks..." I'd walk back to the truck/toolbox and find another tool to hand him instead.

I'd LOVE to find another set exactly like these, I'd probably buy about 3 more sets just in case. BUT I can't find any exactly like them. Channel Lock's current lineup is either straight jaw or V-jaw. I can't find any with the nice smooth curve these have to them. And I can't find any more with the teeth as deep as mine are. The new ones are a lot more shallow.

If anybody can help with an ID and/or a source for these, you MIGHT just wind up with a new pair in your mailbox compliments of a very grateful Tynee.

Have you googled "Channellock curved jaw"? I just did and pairs like that in several sizes popped up. Tooldiscounter seemed to have the closest match, but I didn't look terribly hard. The Channellock site seems to be having serious issues with their security certificates these days, but I'm just about sure they still offer a pair like that. Sears has them in 12".

Tynee, Your problem may be that you are looking at the wrong Model No. the 420 is a straight jaw Plier. IIR the 422 is the same plier with the curved jaws you like. I have a set (chipped top jaw ) but I'l double check the number when I get home.

Bingo. Straight jaw 420's and V-Jaw422's are abundant. That nice curve is elusive.

Confirmed for 422 - Here is the series:

from the top - 410 Nut buster (Dual arcs), 415 Smooth jaw, 420 Std Straight, 422 Curved jaw...

You have to get to old stock if the new is a Vee in the 422.

Good news. Found an ad on eBay for 422's. The description indicted V-Jaw, but the pic was a pair of Curved Jaw. Checked with the seller to make sure the pic was actual item, not stock photo. Now I've got a set headed my way.

Outlaw, I'd have bought you a pair as well, but he only had the one. You'll have to struggle through your next project with one of the other 499 pair of pliers you apparently own ;-)
