Hey guys,

My 16-year old was looking for some odd jobs to augment his summer income (he also caddies for a local resort). So...hired him to seal the driveway. It was last sealed 5 years ago.

Long story short, he's doing a good job, but it is slow!

First issue I had was the first 2 buckets of sealant I bought from the local Ace Hardware were ****. I guess it was old stock from last year or something. It was all separated out in the bucket and he couldn't get it to mix back in. Unfortunately, I was out of town and didn't find out about it until after he had spent 5 hours screwing around with it, trying to use it.

So, I went to Lowes and they had just run out of the same brand of sealant (Blackjack 500 series). The only thing they had left was the more expensive 10-year Blackjack coating...so I bought that. The boy reports it went on much easier and gives better coverage.

Has anyone got a feel for the different types of asphalt coatings? Do you think the 10 year coating will last anything like 10 years?

a lot of my neighbors have their driveways sprayed with coating by some old-dude that comes around the area in a pickup each summer with a couple of barrels in the back. Seems like that only lasts about a year.

I tell you what, it isn't cheap. I think we're looking at about 12 buckets at thirty-some dollars each plus labor.

Phil

Wow never knew asphalt had so much maintaince! 12x30 is $360, for $360 a year plus my time and effort I would be putting concrete it looks nicer and has better properties anyways....

Good luck w/ the 10 year stuff hope it works!

I made up a mixer for my " wrist breaker " 1/2" Milwaukie 600 rpm. drill that will mix cement if needed.

I hired a 23 yr old kid who needed some extra money to reseal my driveway which like the OP hadnt been done in 5 yrs. or so and then ... to do the first ever coat on over 4,000 sq. ft. at my shop behind the house.

The " Gypsys " that drive around wanted 400 $ + ( no cracks filled ) to do just the house driveway ( 8 buckets ) I bought the sealer for about 200 $, 35 $ on 3 buckets of crack filler and paid the kid about 150 $ for about 7-8 hrs. it took him to do it all. He put 2 coats over the whole thing.

I have 22 buckets left to do the shop area, since its never been sealed ... it is going to just **** up that sealer.

Last time I did it myself, I spent about what a pro would have charged to fill cracks and seal it. Next time I'll let 'em do it.
