So I just received a Gearwrench 120xp ratchet in the mail from "liking" Gearwrench on Facebook. I had absolutely no idea I won the contest until I received the ratchet in the mail. I am a die hard SO user, but I can't wait to use this at work on Wednesday. Did anyone else here win one of these ratchets from the FB contest?

Yeah - I haven't used it yet - the only thing I don't like is that the handle seems a little thin for a 3/8 ratchet. But all I usually use is SO, so I a pretty spoiled.

I won one. I have been using it for 2 weeks and I love it. I also got my first Snap On tool, an F80, for christmas. I have to say, I may like the Gearwrench one more. The head is thinner, handle is a bit longer but is perfect. I have been using it A LOT and have had no problems with the dual-pawls whatsoever, they seem really strong. Overall it is a great ratchet, now I am just needing the 1/4" and 1/2". I hope they come out with more varieties soon (flex, cushion).

Im waiting for the flex head as well. I think there probably just waiting for it to get big thats why they gave so many away just to promote it. Word of mouth is the best advertising they have, and its free:bounce:

I had one show up here as well. I was psyched! I'll definitely be putting it to good use.

I got one and it arrived yesterday. Made in Taiwan COO. Took it out of the packaging, a few transport dings in the chrome.

Spun it around a few times and I wasn't very impressed. Put it in my box. Took it out again today and opened it up and added some superlube. Still wasn't impressed with 120 teeth. It didn't feel any different from 60 or 72 or 80. Meh.

Then I took it out a third time, and I counted 60 clicks. Huh?

Opened it up again and noticed one of the 2 pawls were NOT engaging. Thus 60 clicks.

Disassembled everything...

There's a hole in the bottom of the ratchet housing, where a spring with a plastic cap is located. That spring pushes on the lever selector. The lever has TWO springs (with plastic caps) in holes that engage one pawl each, which engages the gear.

Turns out one of the springs with the plastic caps was stuck in the hole in the pawl. thus it wasnt pushing on that pawl to engage the gear. I took some pliers and pulled the spring out. Looks like all 3 springs (with caps) are the same. I swapped the springs around and now things work great.

Now tha its fixed:

It does feel very smooth. What I do like is that it's the longest 3/8" regular ratchet handle at about 8.5in that I have. It's also got a relatively thin head. The pear shape is also less wide than the 60t gearwrench 3/8 stubby i have. The selector switch is not recessed though. The on/off labeling on the selector is useful.

I'm pretty sure I'll use it as regularly as any other ratchet. I'll probably think of it when I want a regular 3/8 with just a bit more leverage, or when I need a slightly thinner head.

I can certainly see this mechanism take off into the other apex brands.

Sorry I didnt think of taking pics. I was struggling trying to put all the parts back in with grease on my hands at the time. It looks like classic Apex/Matco/Armstrong/Gearwrench internals except for stacked pawls. I think toolguyd had posted pics a month ago.

If they came out with a locking flex head 120 tooth like the snapon locking flex ones, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I have yet to try out the one that I had won, so i'll have to report back when I do get a chance to turn something with it.

It does feel very smooth. I'm of the group That doesn't think a 3degree ratchet angle is that big of a deal when compared to 6 degrees or even 10 degrees. I'd drive myself crazy if I were taking a bolt off 3 degrees at a time. Im much more likely to add extensions, wobbles, universals, and even remove obstructions before i limit myself to a swing arc of 3 degrees. What I do like is that it's the longest 3/8" regular ratchet handle at about 8.5in that I have. It's also got a relatively thin head. The selector switch is not recessed though. Both paws arent suppose to engage at the same time if thats what your meaning. They alternate between swings. So there really is only 60 teeth but 2 pawls. 60x2=120 positions. Check out the gearwrench video for the 120xp on youtube they explain it all.

i think thats why he said only one pawl was engaging, thus the 60 clicks...

and the pawls dont alternate between swings, one is engaged in the teeth while the other is over the peak of the teeth. in other words, the two pawls are out of sync, slightly staggered from each other.

Theres only going to be 60 clicks...

You need to think of this ratchet like the classic round head dual pawl mechanisms, not the snap on dual pawl mechanisms.

Whereas the round head dual pawls alternated engagement of the gears on opposite sides of the circle, the stacked pawls alternate engagement of the gears on the same tooth of the gear during the backswing.

I've got 120 clicks. :) you can even hear the alternating pawls click slightly different if you go slow.

The snap on dual pawl is completely different. Only one of the two pawls engage the gear during a backswing. The other pawl is doing nothing until the reverse lever is flipped. Snap on uses 2 pawls to increase the number of teeth contacting the gear, increasing strength from what I understand.

no, there will be 120 clicks. how the hell would it have a 3 degree swing but only 60 clicks in a full revolution?

click(pawl 1)
click(pawl 2)
click(pawl 1)
click(pawl 2)

60 tooth gear being engaged by two staggered pawls.

I stand corrected.

I won one from the forum here where you had to tell why you wanted one. Like the other winners I didn't know I had won until I got the package. It showed up the day before Christmas but I didn't check the mail until Christmas morning so it was a nice surprise Christmas present.

I've held it in my and but haven't used it on anything. I'll take pictures soon.

Congrats to all the winners.

A bit off topic tho, does KD and GW share same "quality" materials and build since they come from the same manufacturer (I assume) and they share the same part numbers. The reason I asked is I found a website that sells them in KD branding for a lot cheaper than that of GW.

So I won and today received an empty envelope. Appears they are going to take care of me. I was all happy til I realized the bag was torn tagged as received without contents.
