I've spent a lot of hours doing 'field repairs' in the Imperial Sand Dunes near Glamis. I tried to organize my tools in tool rolls so I knew what was missing and used a piece of low-knap carpet stowed in the RV when I could limp back to camp. A lot of guys would buy a 'RV Patio Mat' that was fairly large and drive their sand car, ATV or whatever onto it to work on it in camp. (especially nice if you could get under the RV awning) https://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-RV-Patio-Mats/zgbs/automotive/21580675011

Lots of good ideas presented here. Thank you.

I think I'll try the cheap outdoor carpet first. Hopefully it just melts and doesn' t burn. I haven't seen Marston mat in years, and when some sold at auction, the price was extremely high. Snake screen will be my second choice.

The carpet and screen ideas are probably best, but as last resort I'd also suggest picking up a cheap metal detector. I live in a dusty environment and my tractor can turn my native soil into "moon dust", several inches deep; it's godawful.
I picked up a metal detector from amazon and sometimes this is the only way to find the odd bolt or wrench.

Not going to help much if the item is made from plastic, but in that case I'd probably grab a small piece of mesh and just sieve the immediate area in hopes of finding it.

Around here you can get rolls of decent carpeting free from jobs where a homeowner just wanted a different color or style. The old stuff looks barely used and goes into a dumpster.
Try asking a carpet installer about free carpeting.

Try a nearby trucking company that does its own repairs, or truck repair shop, and a six pack on a warm Friday afternoon/evening should get you a trailer door or two if your timing works out, they are destroyed all the time!. Heavy yes! some are 3/4" plywood with aluminum on one side and galvanized on the other some maybe 1" Ply. A lowboy trailer door will be over 10' x ~4' wide regulars are same width x ~9'-9.5' tall. Just an idea for maybe cheap/free. YMMV Harry
