I was thinking about doing some sort of countersunk can lights under my lift. Since the slab is not started yet its now or never. Anyone ever done this? Any tips how?

It seems like a good idea to flood the underside of the car with a lot of light so its easier to work on, but the main reason I can think of that this is not done more regularly is because you run the risk of too much glare from the lights. Main thing is you can't position them where you need them to shine and you would need quite a bit of output to flood the underside of the car which could cause an accident due to the glare in your eyes coming from underneath. It's just so much cheaper and easier to use drop lights or light stands.

A couple other things: it would have to be strong enough to withstand the weight of a car driving over it, and it would have to be waterproof (not to mention gas, oil and solvent proof) so it won't short out when you spill things on it.

There are light fixtures designed for installation in driveways or sidewalks, you'll see them sometimes in front of fancy hotels or places like that, but they're expensive and not easy to find.

the problem i see would be shadows covering the part you will be working on. i always have to readjust my drop light when under my lift. an array of stationary lights would likely cast annoying shadows at times.

I think one may have issues w/ fixtures under a lift, it may be a classified (hazardous) $$$$$ location.

There have been several discussions here about mounting lights on the hoist itself, which may be worth looking into.

I just use a light stand that you can find for $50 at Lowes. Move it where you want, broadcasts a ton of light. And no worries.
