Question for everyone here. Has anyone ever made a motorized wire stripper? Not for the big stuff but for stuff like phone wire.electric cords, smaller than 12 gauge? I have lots of wire scrap like that and I hate to sell it so cheap with the plastic on. What I was wondering about I have seen some that crush the plastic with two metal wheels. I have a motor that would be perfect to run something like that but I was wondering what I could use for the steel rollers. The one I remember seeing on the web has a motor spinning the bottom roller and a roller on top that has a spring that pulls it into the bottom roller. I work on electronics and computers and I wind up with a lot of it in a years time. So instead throwing it into a dumpster I was thinking about building a stripper to clean it. Pictures would be great to see.

the main thing to figure out is the roller / grabber. Basically you have to make a slow electric motor roller setup that grabs like a wire feed roller on a welder, then the wire then feeds into a board with different sized holes drilled into it for different sized wires. On the outlet of the hole is a fixed razor or stanley knife blade clamped into place.

The one with the video did give me a few more ideas. It is about what I would like to have. I have a really nice geared motor I can run it with. It came out of a large copier and it is geared down. As far as burning there is too many negative reasons not to. Its against the law for one, the kind of wire I have would not fair well in a fire. The smell is bad. I saw some over 20 years ago before it became illegal and was not impressed with how it done as far as what I have. Its so small of wire it will corrode away before I could sell it. Then the recyclers here frown on burned wire due to gov regulations. As far as kids go my daughter is in college so she wouldn't have any time.

The wire I have is mostly computer networking wire which is similar to phone wire. But today has fire retardants in the plastic making it hard to burn. So burning wouldn't do much I don't think. I also have some plug in cords and such. As far as stripping the wire the multi wired cables that are a few wires with a outside plastic shield are not so bad to get the outside cover off. But its getting each individual wire off that's a pain. I recycle in my workshop a lot of the broken things if they are not worth fixing. I usually pull the cords, put the metal in a pile, save the wire, etc. I figure it's free money so to speak. But what I would like to do is to have a small area with some type of homemade machine that will strip the wire. As it is now I have boxes all over with wire. Were if I had a machine I could rake 5-10 minutes every so often and put the wire through the machine and strip it. I have seen some on youtube and other places that you insert the wire in and it pulls through the machine and crushes the plastic coating. Then you just peel it off. It would be worth doing in that way. I probably have almost a 55 gallon drum load of wire not stripped now. If it was stripped it would be easier to store and haul off. Thanks for the replies.

Clean bright copper is around $4.00/Lb for scrap. I am looking for a similar tool. Tired of striping wire with a razor knife.

Here is one similar to what I had in mind. In the video they said it use to be a treadmill. So I may be on the lookout for a treadmill. I don't need one this size. I noticed one of the drums has some texture to it. I have been thinking that I could use washers stacked up and put them through a bolt. It would give some texture. Time to hit the junkbox to see what kind of parts I can find.

How about a cutter wheel out of a tubing cutter and roller from a mig wire feeder, with a "V" guide to center the wire. A spring loaded mechanism on the cutter wheel for different size wire, thar should cut the insulation, seen a larger version to cut cable and it worked great.

Even more simple, the tool used to strip romex cable sheathing. A pipe you thread the wire through to start, a small blade punched into the tube to cut the insulation, and a motor to pull it through the 'die.'

Hell, you could hand crank it for that matter. Doesn't necessarily need to be powered

I just roll it all into a ball and burn the insulation off with kerosene.

I made this simple jig to strip some rolls of #12 solid that was given to me. It's just a
2x4 with a hole drilled into it. I hammered in a razor blade to strip off the insulation. The metal strap was added to separate the insulation from the copper wire. I feed the wire thru by hand to get it started, then I clamp the board in my vise and feed the wire out a window to my back yard. I just grab the wire and walk to the end of my yard (approx 250') cut it at the window and repeat till the end. I stripped 2 450+ foot rolls in less than 45 mins, including rolling up the stripped wire and cleanig up stripped insulation.

I just made one yesterday...after watching the (2) youtube videos... one titled "homemade wire stripper"
http://www.youtube.com/user/robraykino?blend=24&ob=5
and the other "franks wire stripping machine"

Both show a treadmill, after some modification turned wire crusher. There are no blades on either of the machines. Realizing i had access to an old treadmill, i thought i would give it a try. After looking around online, at the various motorized, or drill power strippers you can buy, i realized that attempting to make one first would be the right idea because they are either too expensive, or look a little flimsy, plus i like to make stuff.
An old treadmill is the perfect starting point. Obviously it has to have its own motor. But, if you can get your hands on one, more than half the work is done before you get started. The motor is mounted, leveled, wired, and set up to run one of the rollers already. Not to mention the most important thing being you have (2) perfectly round and long rollers that, if mounted right, will fit tight to each other. The tricky part is figuring out how to mount the second roller tight up against the first, with sufficient pressure to crush the wire you are going to be feeding through it. It took me around 4 hours to cut up the treadmill frame and piece it together to create the second roller mount, and i spent around $8.00 at a hardware store on some nuts and bolts. Once i got it put together it worked pretty well, although i do need to make a few modifications to it. The main one being to better secure the second roller mount and possibly add a spring on either side to create more pressure between the two rollers. This would allow me to raise the speed a bit higher and to feed the wires through without having to hold them back a bit to make sure the insulation is crushed. As of now i have to manually slow them feeding through the machine in order to ensure that the insulation is completely crushed. If i let them go on their own they just shoot right through the rollers without any crushing. I figure i've got another hour of tinkering before its right.

If you do attempt this sort of thing, definitely keep the treadmill controls/wiring intact. This way when your done with the modifying, there is no wiring of switches, speed controllers, or having to mount a drill. You simply plug the thing in, set the speed, and go. I also cut the piece used to mount the controls down and remounted them just above the rollers when i was done for easy use.

As far as tools, i used a Sawzall with a metal blade to cut up the frame (could use a hacksaw), and a cordless drill to make any holes needed for mounting the second roller. Also used an cordless impact driver on all the bolts (could use wrenches/ratchets instead).

Hopefully this helps...good luck.

Thanks for the reply folks. I had thought about a treadmill but I found something similar. I got a old copy type machine that was tossed out. This is not one of the xerox types but the type you put a paper into and it has a drum that spins. It may be called a duplicators, from the 50s to 60s. Anyway it has a round drum and a motor spins it. Its about 10 inches wide so it looks to be perfect for what I need. I have some old printer parts and I am going to try to find another for the top. I think I will put two bars to hold the second roller and put springs on it. I think that will do what I want. I need it mainly for telephone and also 120 volt cords. So I don't need one for the larger stuff.

how about burning it ? Burn the plastic off, and left will be the metal :)

Not a good idea because this is very dangerous in that it's a health hazard. Burning plastic insulation release dioxins in the air. Chances are very good that anyone in the surrounding area will inhale them.

The Dangers of Burning Copper Wiring

The copper wire that is in most homes is protected by a layer of insulation. Some people wish to destroy this insulation by holding the copper wire over a low flame. In factories, this insulation is stripped off in a few minutes due to intense heat provided by an incinerator, but placing the wire onto a residential fire will lead to low heating destruction of the insulation, which releases toxins like heavy metal particles, dioxins, and other chemicals called furans. These toxins can lead to, among other things, heavy metal poisoning that can hurt the nervous system, lung infections and inflammations, and even heart problems. Inhaling toxins like dioxins will increase the risk of cancer.

Don't forget its illegal to do so with current EPA laws. I have no intentions, I hate the smell of burning stuff other than campfires. If I can't strip it I won't burn it.

^^ Good to know, but I live around some serious rednecks who believe in that "old school" method of stripping wire and won't think twice about it. Like you, I've gathered quite the collection of copper wire from scrapping a bunch of old Volkswagens and desire a means of stripping the insulation. I "lost" a lot of money last time I hauled in a large pile of wire that still had the insulation on it.
