Anyone had any luck post a craigslist ad for tools

Yeah, the long drive one, yes, I will hold those, but I give them a HARD time frame, and it works out.

Yeah, thats how I do it. If they arn't there they better be on the phone. All the others I tell them I don't wait on the dead. I like the guys who make the 30-50 miles drive. I'll normally get the asking price for it. I don't do neg over the phone. I'll sometimes cut them a small break if they find something I didn't see. I normally make it sound worse than it really is because it's better to veiw something better than decribed than be disappointed because it was hyped up which is how I find things when I go to buy. People have a very differant veiw of what "Nice" is in my area

Well I just made a trade on craigslist so hopefully all will work out. The guy is in Dallas and is going to ship the tools to his parents that live a few blocks away and when they get here I will make the trade with his dad. He emailed me this morning and said they have been shipped so we will see.

I traded a Kreg jig for woodworking that I don't use that cost me about 110 dollars for a 7 pc. set of sae and a 7 pc. set or metric gear wrench with the swivel type heads on them. Sears sells them for 89 dollars each 7 pc. set. Hope I did alright in that trade. Like I said with woodworking tools you can only expect about 50% of new cost. Still trying to figure out what used automotive tools sell for. It seems to have a broad range when looking at ads.

What do you pay for used tools as far as percentage wise of new.

Boy on that last question, "How high is UP?" Just too many possible answers.

On an interesting tangent, NEVER hold anything on CL.

+1 Never hold anything! Craigs List is the land of no shows.

My basic rule on holding an item is simple. Call me when you leave the house, and I will hold it until you arrive (agree on approx travel time in advance). This method has always worked for me.

Other quote: "My biggest issue seems to come from someone putting up an ad for selling tools, but fails to tell what brand and price. Just call and we'll discuss."


I buy and sell quite a bit on C/L and ebay. My best deals BY FAR have been on items poorly described, no pictures or lousy pictures, no brand, no size, no nothing. The worse the ad, the better the deal!! A lousy ad = no competition (as a buyer). I love crappy ads, and sellers that communicate poorly, as that equals discount. A typical **** ad discount I get is 66% to 75%. I buy and sell a lot of bicycles. My best C/L buy of all time was on a one word ad: "bycicle". That's right, the seller didn't even know how to spell bicycle. No pictures, no brand, no model, no size, no details. I called about a week after the ad was posted for the novelty of it. Scored a 90% discount on that one.

Not to cause offense, but I can't quite get all of what you are saying here.

So I may be addressing it completely wrong, but first I get that you think e-mail is the way to go.
Have to disagree, as I said before. Not one e-mail in 10 sells my stuff. Sorry, but absolutely true.
I'm just talking about legitimate e-mails not the bots, etc.
Next I'm kind of wondering why you are interested in the people you are selling to.
That's from the 'getting to know them'.
I'm sometimes interested in who I'm buying from, but unless it's a house, a firearm (forbidden on CL) or some other dangerous or controlled substance (forbidden on CL) why on earth would I care about them???

I'm selling to them.
I don't care if they are black,white, brown, gay, Socialist, John Bircher's Ballet dancers or Astronauts. I am selling product, not 'facebook friending'.

A semi-articulate Chimpanzee with a wad of cash can have my stuff, if he wants. Hopefully he can help load it...

Some of the brightest people I know spell like *****'s on e-mail. Not computer savvy.
When I had a secretary to do my typing I couldn't type or spell for beans and didn't care a bit.
I try to be careful in forums but then, it's not a sales medium.


On forgetting clues, by which I assume you mean pertinent data or info in the e-mails, sadly, I find that the average comprehension on reading is under 15% on CL.

Which is higher than the national average, still, read a bunch of CL adds and notice how many of us have to 'dumb down' the text to the point that you are saying
"Bright, shinny, thing. Ask what it is"
because if you write more than about fifty words, NOBODY will call. Or read the dang thing.
This may not apply in all places, I'm dealing with Southern California.

The add reads : 'Car with new tires, new brakes, just smogged, ding in front fender, runs great.'
The response by e-mail "How are the tires? Do the brakes work, Can it pass smog? Does it run? Any damage to the body?"
All that from actual e-mails my buddy got on a car a month ago.

Most the rest of the e-mails made those people look like rocket scientists.

Guy who bought it e-mailed and asked "Still got it?" then called and picked it up an hour later.


i know what you mean but getting to know the person before they come look at what you have for sale makes a difference. you can certainly figure out that they might be way over their head or just don't know why they are getting it from you or that they have tons of money (maybe i should ask more for the product) or this guy knows what he is talking about, i should sell to him
