Anyone hang their tools on pegboard?

I am always impressed with a well laid-out pegboard design.

However, pegboards are not for me.
1) No wall space in my garage
2) I'd rather not have all my tools on display for anyone peeking in to see
3) No security. At least a lockable toolbox will provide a few minutes of delay...or permanent delay for your dumber crooks

I would be game for a small 3x5 setup directly over a workbench for your basic hammers/pliers/screwdrivers though...

I recently picked up a free piece of pegboard on the side of the road and decided to give it a shot

I don't bother with the pegboard.

I have a substantial sheet of ply above the bench, and I just screw hooks into that, or make wooden brackets for the larger tools!

I've varnished it so it's a lot easier to keep clean than pegboard!

Well, of all I saw posted on this thread, mine was the most cluttered so I went ahead and started the new version. Old board and new board pics:

Only one hammer hung on the new version...more to come.

Just for now, I have four screws holding the board at each corner. To fir it out I used 1x3's all around the perimeter...would've preferred 1x2's but I had plenty of the former and didn't want to wake the house up ripping it down with the table saw. Should I also provide any support in the middle? Or around the perimeter is enough?

Thanks, KZ

Thats gonna be great. I want to see it when you are finished. Good luck!

Wow, decaf! That is amazing. How do you keep them free of dust?

I clean all my tools twice a week.

Just kidding, it´s not soo bad with dust in here, depends on how much i´m working....I´m just a DIY.
The angle grinder is a pain. Dust everywhere after that one....

I must tell you guys a funny thing that my son (11 years) told me when i was finished with this pegboard.

"Dad, you got 3 times as much tools then the car repair shop by the gas station 300 yards away".

How too comment that one??? I just laught....:lol_hitti

I've got just my woodworking stuff and yard tools on pegboard. Everything else is in roll cabs.

I need to get a pic of my dad's workshop the next time I visit. He's that guy who hangs everything on pegboard and draws an outline of every single piece with a sharpie.

Jupp, we wanna see that, don´t forget to take the picture....

Nice job decaf! It really looks impressive.

I use pegboard for some tools but most are in tool boxes. I have duplicate tools that I use frequently on pegboard above my bench. It looks like you made all of your hangers and racks custom for your tools. Have you posted any close-up photos or comments on how you made them? If you did, I missed them.

I'm glad decaf revived this from '12. I used to have all my wrenches on pegboard and really liked it. I too have basically every Craftsman RP wrench and right now they're consuming the full-width drawer of my 54" KRL, but it's a cluster. I hate wrench organizers in drawers, so much wasted space, or never the perfect number of slots, or it ends up like a game of Jenga to try to fit it all in perfectly.

If this is a waste of space, then you need different racks. Racks SAVE space...

I'm in the "Wallspace is too valuable crowd. The closest I come to peg board concept is a magnetic rack on the right edge of my workbench, and some 12 ga. insulated copper wire loops I made up for a set of Ball Peen (and one smaller engineer) hammers on the pull handle of a roller next to my DP. both in arms reach of when I'm at the workbench and vise.

I took a look at my wrench drawer, and I just don't see it. We can agree to disagree! If you can show me a rack that's infinitely configurable for:

1. wrench length (most racks taper, locking you into a pre-determined step down in sizes)
2. number of slots
3. adjustably (is that a word?) labeled as I have two of every size 1/4 - 1.5" - the only way I see to keep the wrenches tight is have them standing on their side rather than angled back as that eats up more space, thus you'd need labels on the rack itself
4. length of rack must be infinitely adjustable so you're not awkwardly trying to make pre-fab racks fit in the depth of any drawer
5. must accommodate stubbies, crossforce and offset wrenches, and seamlessly transition from one style to the next within the same rack

I'm ready to buy!

Look through this thread:

Lots of options.

I have a couple of these from Northern Tool. They are non-tapered, and with some basic common sense, you can link as many together as you want. Made in USA too:

We were talking about them being a waste of space, so where did all these other requirements come in? :dunno: If you work at it a little harder, I'm sure you can think of more mutually incompatible features!

In any case, point one: add enough unreasonable variables and yes; you need a Peg board (good luck with DBE's...)

Point two "Labels" Really? Seriously? Why would you need labels? Will you forget where a wrench goes?

Wrench length: They DO make different racks for different length tools

Two of each: Me too; I use two wrench racks and set them in the drawer 90 deg from each other so they fill one end/corner nicely.

Get away from those silly plastic things, and get the old fashioned sheet metal racks. far fewer issues with that type from what I've seen.

If you really can't find anything, make a rack: Two pieces of aluminum angle, and a pair of connector bars, and you can set them to any angle/space you want.

Here are a couple of examples:

somewhat off topic but are all pegboard designs the same? Specifically the distance from one hole to another. The reason I ask is because of this ---> http://garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=213233

I got burned once.. I don't wanna get burned a second time. I got a bunch of hooks from a company called Wall Control. The hooks were on the thin side as far as the sheet metal goes. Wasn't thrilled with them.. didn't hate them but wasn't thrilled with them either. I keep saying I'm going to "modify" them to my liking. The other issue I had was the hooks that used two different slots WOULDN'T work unless I cut them in half, shortened/lengthened them, and welded them back together. I don't have a welder so they've been collecting dust somewhere in my garage.

I know there are at least two standards, and I think two different hole/Peg diameters.

I use peg board for hanging the odds and ends mainly in the garage. I have everything from pipe wrenches to levels, pull saws, hack saw, staplers, etc. In my basement workshop I have most of my tools hanging up due to having a much smaller tool box there. But that is mainly woodworking type tools. Saw, clamps, saw blades, hammer, packs of sandpaper, etc.

Blue point has a magnetic wrench rack that would address those issues i think - made by mechanics time savers I believe. Coworker of mine has 2 of then and has 2 of each size per rack - one on the holder one under it. works well

I just finished dressing up my old boring pegboard yesterday. There are two wall cabinets that hang on the ends but the middle is wide open so I wanted something to break up the plain look. More pics in my projects thread.

Nice wallpaper...what sticky stuff did you use? Contact cement or just plain ole' Elmers glue?

Thanks, I took a 1929 book on Machines and pulled 30-40 pages at a time, then cut them to size in a HF paper cutter and briefly soaked in 50/50 mix of water and Elmers. Once I placed the page up on the wall, I used a 2" paint brush to even the paste out before rolling the pages flat with a wall paper roller. After a couple days dry time, hit it with some clear to seal it, I'm deciding on flat, semi-flat or gloss right now.

I'm not a fan of pergboard either, (or of hanging tools in general, for that matter). I make a rack out of thin strips of deal and then just hang things from that with hooks made from sleeved, solid core ground wire, for the odd bits I have the urge to hang, or for bits which don't have any other reasonable method of being stored. You can see it over on the left side of this photo, to the rear left of the red Amanco.

Little ever makes it onto that rack, as you can likely tell. :D

I'm with SMKS, plywood and nails.
  • Nails never come off when you take a tool off (unless you're a gorilla).
  • Nails and ply are super cheap, you are not locked into a 'system' that requires pricey hook thingys.
  • It's very quick to reorganize if you need to fit in another tool, just pull out the nails and hammer more in!
  • However, it's not for neat people, really. I just really need to SEE all my tools in order to remember them quicker for solving problems and seeing possible solutions in my head.
  • Also, I work alone, so no tools go 'missing', hahah. Unless I put them somewhere and forget them, which I do too much.

I have a 4'x8' cabinet above my bench. The back, sides and interior of the doors are covered with 1/8" pegboard. I keep woodworking tools in it. One side is files, planes, scrapers and handsaws. The other is hammers, screwdrivers, squares and levels. 1/8" is nearly impossible to find now days, and the hooks for 1/4" leave something to be desired for small tools.

:wtf: 1/8" is the common size in all the lumber stores now , 1/4" is hard to find, at least around here :dunno: also, 1/4" pegs are a lot sturdier than the smaller ones, did you have that backwards? :dunno:

I just hung a bunch of pegboard in my barn shop. I scrounged around and came up with enough tools to have a nice little set handy by this work bench.

No, because in Houston the 1/4" is much easier to find. I know 1/4" is sturdier, but for 99% of what you hang, 1/8" is fine. I built my cabinet in 1986 and the pegboard is still doing well. For simple hanging such as wrenches and sockets the 1/4" would be great, but I haven't seen screwdriver racks for example, in 1/4".
