I ordered the Kraftform Kompact from KMStools and the bit storage area doesn't open easily.

The unit I received was an open box (although I ordered a new one) with obvious wear but there are no visible signs of abuse. I would only be mildly annoyed by that, if the tool worked properly.

How easily should it open?

When I press the button to open the bit compartment, I have to press really hard and wiggle to open it. Is this normal? Every review I have read gushes on this tool and the quality so I have a hunch I just have one that isn't quite 100%.

The Wera Rapidaptor this thing is built around is nothing short of amazing, IMO. I ordered this driver based on another Rapidaptor I've been using in an impact and it is fantastic. This one is just as good as the one I've been using for the last few months.

I have a Kraftform Kompakt and the opening mechanism works perfect, no need in wiggling anything. You got a defective one

I bought one 8 years ago and it worked well for a couple years. I don't use it as much any more so I just cope with it. I remember spraying some rubber care product and think it did operate better for some time. If it's like that out of the box, I can't imagine it getting any better.

Mine pops right open with no effort. I've had it about 4 years and used it a lot. I wouldn't say it is anything all that special, but I would say that I love the 1/4 inch zyklop ratchet with socket and bit set they offer

i dont have the kompact, but i have the ratcheting version with fixed shank. and the back opens very easily. almost too easily when dropped (ive only dropped it a few times and dread when i do, because the bits go flying out!). maybe try using it a bit and if it doesn't get any better, contact wera. they are good about standing behind their products and have a US division that can do the replacement.
