Anyone have a Liftmaster 8500?

I need a dimension to see if I can install without the alternate installation kit. I need to know the dimension from the bottom of the torsion bar to the bottom of the unit. I'd appreciate it if anyone could pass that along as it is not in the install manual.

My 3800 13 inches and I believe the unit box itself has not changed on the 8500, just the electronics and security.

It should be right about 13.25"

I have pondered it, and I can't for the life of me think of a reason the unit couldn't be mounted horizontal instead of vertical using some not overly engineered bracket.
A piece of 4x4 angle medium weight steel would surely do the trick with just a couple of lags.
It rotates, so it doesn't care about orientation.

Is this the alternative install way?

Hehe it may be. I have a man door right next to the OHD and it would be a little tight... read the bottom of the unit overlapping the man door. The horizontal method could work and would be far more cost effective than the extra $100 for the offset install kit.

Much appreciate the measurement efforts but the standard install won't cut it. Will investigate other options.

No, someone back in 76 though it would be a good idea to put the overhead door 3" our of the corner. Funny thing it that the man door is 12" out of the corner. I think they screwed up....

I called a local company to come out and give me an estimate for raising the door tracks. I have plenty of ceiling height and one of my peaves is that one track runs right across the face of a window. So by raising the tracks my clearance issue goes away.

Awesome. It makes it super easy to get a 4-post lift in there as well.

The unit can be mounted horizontally. No issues. Do it all the time on low headroom rear torsion. Need to add a pulley so emergency release still can be worked from floor.

I figured as much. lol I mounted mine on the right side of the door to keep clutter down.
