I was browsing around Craigslist tonight and came upon a local toolbox manufacturer.

http://www.ludwigcustommetals.com/CustomToolStorage.html

the 42"er has double ball bearing slides on top three and bottom drawers, fully welded inside and out. Looks to me like a pretty stout box, plus they can custom build to your specs. A 42" bottom is $1800.

What's everyone think? (I should also mention I am in no way affiliated with this company)

They look cool and if they are made in the USA could be very nice, but I couldn't get any real info out of their site to see what sizes are offered, gauge of metal used and overall weight of the unit.

The only thing I noticed on their site is it doesn't look like they make a top chest for these boxes. That or else they just don't have any pictured.

Think they look nice, USA too boot! If I had the money, a long bench type w/ss top. That way I can reach all my tools and have space for my tools instead of boxs' and a bunch of small storage thingies so that I can get the tools needed. How is that gauge compared to Snap-On or Lista?

Hi Drisco, yes i did.

Sorry for the late reply, been working lots and bagged.

Here's what Matt said,

Can't say that I make "standard" boxes. Usually made to order, but then someone see's it and then make 6 more or so.

I have approximately 20 current configurations. Some I have made one...some I have made 6 of specific sizes, drawer config, and
so on.

Currently we are making 8 small boxes that are 31"w x 28"d x 36" tall. These are being made to fit a specific area under a workbench and we are putting 3" casters under them.

In other words, space is limited, we are maximizing the tool storage.

A sampling of prices are :

31"w x 28"d x 36"h 9 drawer is $1100 + any shipping or tax.

42"w x 24"d x 39"h 9 drawer is $1800 + any shipping and/or tax.

60"w x 30"d x 45"h 12 drawer is @2500 + any shipping and/or tax.

I welcome mulitples of certain configs, and sizes.

I am currently working on drawings for a top box for the 42" chest.

If it helps, from every indication that I can find, the steel I use is made in the USA.

Thank you for your inquiry!

Matt

thanks for sharing the email Buco, sounds like they do mostly custom work which sure sounds interesting.

They're actually less than an hour away from me, but I'm not really in the market for an expensive (to me) new toolbox.

Bringing this thread back from the dead. Seen their ad on Craigslist and may purchase a box from them if anyone has had any experience with them since this thread. I may just have to drive the 3 hours and check them out for myself.

I like this idea of the floor lock system. I'm not sure how they do it but it seems to recover the 6" or more loss at the bottom due to the height of caster wheels. Yet the box will lift and roll around (on a fairly level surface).
