Just curious where to start I picked up a trade in today from my dealer. I'm charging it up now for a trial weekend to see if I'm keeping it or not. I was going to get the Solus Ultra or whatever the latest Solus was but this came in and it's got a labscope so I told the dealer I'll give it a test drive and let him know.
I'm a little disappointed already it smells like cigarette's pretty bad and it's filthy.
Any pointers? I've pulled codes with one of these before and in 2003 I think when they came out or were pretty new I did a $55 SO training dinner/instruction on one.

Go to Snap on Diagnostics web site. They have training videos that are really good and in depth.

I don't know what you're paying for it but in my opinion they are very overpriced for the functionality available, and don't forget the updates will cost the better part of a grand a year. Buy the OE scan tools for the lines you service the most, and an inexpensive scanner for the other models.

I have a modis. I thought I got it for a good deal. I use it every day, and use the scope quite often.

Learn to use the scope and you will be glad you bought it.

I purchased mine for 4k with 11.2 and euro on it. The modis is a MUCH more powerful tool when you know how to use something other than just the scanner on it.

check out http://www1.snapon.com/diagnostics/us/TechCentral6/TrainingandEvents1.htm to learn the ins and outs of it.

Make sure you shut it off right after use,the battery goes dead if you don't.Remove the battery after shutting it off.The European update is a grand, just this done.Try reading trouble codes out of a Jaguar with an after market scan tool, won't read and I know the Modis will.Jaguar has it set up the customer has to go to the dealer and with hold info.

It's a great tool. If the price is rite keep it. you can always buy it a new skin from aeswave.com or snap on. One of the best and time proven scan tools out on the market. Make sure you get it with 11.4.

I leave mine on all day, with it plugged in. Hate waiting for it to turn on

Yeah but I want a scope and a component tester too. For the price of a pass through for a couple of makes I got this used Modis. Maybe full retail on a new one is overpriced but that's why I go used

I think it's up to 08 right now, 9.4?

My dealer said he's not even marking it up. I basically am paying the guy's trade in allowance on it. It needs a new OBD2 cable I think the dealer might throw it in. That's about it. For my needs I don't need to upgrade. When I open my shop I doubt I'll be working on a bunch of new stuff. I mainly wanted the scope and component test functions.

My dealer offered me a used Solus for $1500. I was looking on CL and that was what they seemed to be going for. I didn't want to buy a unit and find out at a later date that it was hot so I offered my dealer $2000 updated to 11.2 ( that was the newest version at the time). He took it, I was happy. It took a **** a month or so later and he paid to get it fixed. The fix was basically a new unit. I was real happy. Hit him up for the upgrade for the price and see if he'll take it. If he won't, add a few bucks to your offer. Just because you aren't working on 2010s now doesn't mean you wont be working on them two years from now. Ask him about a warranty, it was sure nice when my guy paid to get my scanner fixed.

I have one at my shop and i think it was a waste of money. i cant even readapt a nissan/infinite throttle body with this machine.

my snap on guy sold it to me for $3000. it was updated to the lastest version, i think 11.2, with asian and european, all components, and 2 batterys. im about to sell it after i get my launch x12.

im a snap on guy, but i think this was a waste of $3000. if u have a choice try the launch x-12 its really really good.

Bought mine new many years ago. Use it every day. Doesn't do every thing but does more than my Determinator. I dont do Euro cars so cant say how it works on them. I has lots of information in it. Not thrilled with all the Keys you need to flip around. Would like a Tech two but have to stop spending money some where. Modis has made me lots of cash. i hear Ford is going to start charging per month for their VCM.

It is true the Modis can read trouble codes from a Jaguar.Jaguar does not give any info out at all.

read a code in generic obd2 and scan a car to me are two different things. i have a $40 code reader that will read generic obd jag codes. some jags you can cheat and act like you are scanning a lincoln. Yet see ****** temp, do any bi directional or live data--nope snappy aint touching ti as of now.

hell, they just got landrover and volvo on last 2 updates. really need to get something w/ saab. as im not buying a tech 2 and more software for the few swedes i touch.

There's one in the shop with a busted screen and it still works the last time I picked it up. I use it only for the scope/GMM function now as my scanner of choice is AutoEnginuity.

For a long time, this Modis was the workhorse in the shop and has served it well. Now, several techs have their own scanners, mostly OTC Genisys or clones and a few Actrons.

I haven't messed with the Modis much but I have worked for Honda and Land Rover who both used the VCM module and they're very sketchy. Both dealers I worked in were sending them back all the time. I would be really worried of failure if I bought one.
I certainly wouldn't pay to monthly use on top of the initial price. They're pretty pricey new.

s type jag's are lincolns. you dont have full run of every module, but can get into engine ******. Or atleast you could i .havent had to do it in a while to see if this loop hole still works. kinda like scanning a lotus elise as a pontiac vibe gt--or the bmw powered range rover-- use a different car that has the same engine to scan it.

Mine is updated to 11.4 and has Euro and Heavy Duty (came that way). Never have used it on large trucks but I was very happy when Volvo coverage was added. If all you need is a code reader (which it sounds like a lot of these guys are using it for), you will have way too much machine for your needs. If you need a bi-directional scanner that can run tests on different modules as well as a lab scope, it is a great tool if you can get a good price on it.

As for the lab scope, you use it with a scanner to see what is going on with different sub systems. The scanner will get your "backend" info from the computer and the lab scope will get the "frontend" information from the sensors/motors/wiring before that info makes it to the computer. This will help you diagnose what the problem is instead of reading a code and throwing parts at the problem.

Another nice feature on the SO diagnostics is the troubleshooter that will help point out areas to look at and tests to try and isolate the problem. One thing to remember on a Modis....Don't lose your keys!!!! That is one thing I love about the new Solus Ultra and the Verdit, no keys.....

hell, they just got landrover and volvo on last 2 updates.

I test drove both a Verus and a Modis. Neither of them had near the coverage of my DEC SuperScan (which is barely usable) and did not come anywhere near the functionality of my Rovacom.

I was really disappointed when I called Snap_on and asked about future updates and functionality and was basically told to ask my dealer.

I'm not gonna spend nearly $10K for a pretty box that does half the job.

If you want a computer system from hell to work on,Land Rover.Problem with the European and Japanese is there are no diagnostics to go by when figuring out a problem on Mitchell's online program. They don't realize this is a must fixing a problem on a car.
