What are you doing to make it not stink?

We have waterless urinals at a couple of bathrooms at work and ours stink. Perhaps the janitor is doing something wrong.

About 7 years ago Kohler put two tractor trailor sized courtesy bathrooms to showcase thier waterless flush toilets between the main buildings at the eaa airshow in Oshkosh. After a few days they stunk so bad that no one would even go near the things.

Are thier any special chemicals or cleaners that you use to make yours not stink?

Urinals I agree the stench is enough to make someone go outdoors.

They are mounted on the wall where the flush urinals used to be. The flush urinals didn't stink.

The Kohler ones probably went into holding tanks in the rig. I've used the same exact setup with flush urinals and they didn't stink.

So just run off into the regular sewer hook up.

Interesting tho, for a shop may not be a bad idea.

Oh God no! Parts of the university I work at "went green" with these damned things. Some areas already yanked them out and reinstalled regular flushing urinals.
Think about it. Urine splashes when it hits the porcelain. No flush, no rinsing off the splash. The bathroom starts to smell like a cat's litter box in short order. Soon the entire end of the building was stinking like stale piss.

If you are just trying to save water from an occassional flush you are probably cheap enough that you'd like to save on the sit down job too and would defintely want to save the price of a new waterless urinal. So, why not just collect rainwater from the gutter and use that for the flushing? If you are a garage guy I don't think I have to tell you how to set it up to work on the standard ballcock in the toilet.

I was thinking about putting in a urinal in my commercial building. About 98% of the time its just guys taking a wizz. The cost of city water/sewer is fairly high here, a urinal could cut my quarterly bill down quite a lot.
Is there any certain type that would work better than the other? I noticed some say they are a tank or tank less.

I used to work in an old office park. My company rented a space there for about a year. The bathroom was like walking into a time machine. The weird thing was that the urinals looked like a cross between a urinal and a bird bath. They flushed and had a bowl in the middle, but were out in the room instead of against the wall. They had a huge long "snout" that looked like it was to prevent chronic dribbling. Myself and the other employees thought it was weird as **** but, hey do you really care that much what you're ******* on?

I \ran into a plumer friend one day and asked him what was up. Apparently some time in the 60s someone got a bright idea to make a unisex urinal. Just think about your wife/girfriend holding their skirt up and waddling over a knee high trough of piss water to do her business. There was apparently an expectation that the female user didn't own a pair of pants as there would be no way to aim the female anatomy at the target area without straddling directly on top of it.

Shockingly, women didn't think highly of them and these things failed massively in the market place. A lot of cheapskate landlords bought them for a song on clearance to put into mens restrooms as per above statement that all things being equal most men could care less where/what they're ******* on.

Anyway, all this urinal discussion about saving money in a commercial building brought back some memories. A few of my co-workers read this site. I'll be interested if they comment

I like some of the creative answers on here, it makes me look at the floor drain in my shop in a whole new way.

Just kidding but that does remind me of an amusing story. A couple of weeks ago my 4 year old son announced at the dinner table that he'd almost had an accident earlier in the day so he "went in dat hole in da floor".

Concerned, I asked him what hole in the floor he was talking about and he replied by pointing at the heat register that happens to be by his seat at the table. Sure enough, he'd peed through the vent. Any port in a storm I guess.

Mine at home. We have waterless at work. If you keep up on it it's ok. The filters are around $40. Little difficult to clean. You cant just dump chemicals and water down the drain it will hurt the filter system.

My shop is at a empty lot I own, so I built a 3'x3'x7' out house & placed it in back yard ,kinda hid with a storage building & fence ... No urinals that way..Neighbors haven't said anything. They are glad I fixed the property up.

I step around back of the garage, but I have to watch as I have taken the fence down. Once I get the addition on, we are going to put up a new fence, but I may tie into my septic also, depending on how things go. I have to fix the baffle in the septic and it is deep enough to run a line to it from the garage, but I need to run water out to the garage. It's going to take a little bit of planning, but I think I can pull it off.

When I added a bathroom to my barn, I found an urinal and flush valve on Craiglist. When I talked to the owner, he said it was a bachelor gift from his buddies (probably picked up from some site) and if he has the balls, he should tell his new wife that it was going in the bathroom at the new house. Well, 8 years later he was selling it new still in a box so we all know how that worked out.

I have one of these I picked up at the medical store for 10 bucks I think. Works great for my detached garage I have now. It's only about 20 feet from the house though so depending if I'm really busy I use it or go to the house. Just wash it out every once in awhile.

Now the new house we are looking at has the garage at the other end of the acre lot. This is going to pose a problem and an annoyance to have to go to the house for #2 so I think we will be looking to add a bathroom in the corner or something. It's a hike.

We do have this Coleman Large Portable Flush toilet that we use quite often when tenting and it may have to do until that bathroom build comes.

Yeah it ***** to clean but is a money saver.

the seat, take it off and tie a knot in it and toss it in the trash.

Well, the urinal is installed. I will have to wait until next week to pick up the flush valve and the pvc for the drain. One little mishap, I ran a nail right into the tile from the back side of the wall putting in the mounting braces. That's O.K., I have to remove a few pieces of tile to install the t.p. holder I forgot I had bought.

We have used the waterless urinals in quite a few projects, mostly restaurants. They seem to work very well and are eco friendly.
