Did a search and couldn't find anything. Anyone here have a small (or large) axe collection? There are a lot of guys out there with some older and special axes that they hold dear to their hearts....

I have a few axes,couple of old hatchets,couple of splitting mauls and this real cool splitting wedge from France that works great it has these grooves cut into it unlike a standard wedge.

A Plumb small axe, given to me by parents when I was young. It is a step up from a hatchet with a longer handle about 2/3 the length of a regular ax handle. Also have a Mann Tigerax, which I bought because it had a heavier head, 5 pounds I think, to use for splitting wood. Replaced it in use with a 8 pound splitting maul which was better but not perfect for splitting wood. I have a True Temper hatchet with a hammer head opposite to the blade, and I had a Plumb, same design, which I passed on to daughter who is a MD with the comment that she might need it to cut limbs sometime. She got the joke.

I have the Estwing 36" camp axe. It's quite good and lightweight! I used to swing big bad axes when I was younger, but now that I'm hurt, I just don't have the range of movement and strength required to swing an 8lb maul! The little estwing is as light as I've ever felt, and after a few minutes with a grinder I put a nice grind on it, it works quite a bit better. I did weld a small piece of ss on the back end of it to help it be used as a hammer / give it a bit more weight on the head (just a chunk of 1"x3"x.375" SS)

I've got a one axe collection, it's a Kentucky Irregular. 
Oh Man, I think I'm gonna cry... I spent a couple years from 69 to 71 collecting log building tools before going up to Prince Gorge to learn the trade. In the 15 years or so after, while I was building log homes I was still collecting tools. I had broad axes given to me by old timers I had know who were too old to use them any more. Chisels, scorps, adzes, bench axes, gouges, peeling spuds and draw knives, scribers, peevees, cant hooks, swede killers, timber tongs, climbing gear and a lot of newly invented tools made by a german craftsman who would build us anything we wanted from a drawing. All these were stolen when I went away to a remote logging camp for almost a year. I also lost welders, winches, my 6" record vise and too much to list. whaaa whaaaa boo hoo.
Here is some shots of a few pieces I had at my brother's farm that I just got back a little over a year ago. I apologize for the condition they're in, tools that are in use look so much nicer.

I have a definite Hatchet collection; at least 49 of those, and at least 12 axes, counting two splitting mauls and two Pulaski's

I got a few, 30- 40 hatches, and a bunch of axes. One of my hobbies is collecting wood working tools. Been at it since the 70s. 'll post some pics. later

2 Wetterlings. One is a splitting maul, the other is a camping/backpacking hatchet. That little one is so sharp it will shave hair off your arm right out of the sleeve when you buy it!! Excellent for making kindling when i cook with a dutch oven and the maul just tears through seasoned oak rounds without slowing down
The large axe is a Craftsman i picked up at an estate sale. I actually have 2 more but one was given to my brother and the other is just a head that needs a handle.
The last little hatchet is a US Army made by American Fork and Hoe, dated 1945

i have a stanley, eastwing, snow and nealey, and an old collings.
We need more photos in this thread guys.
I had a neat 3 1/2 LB ax I used for splitting that had a thick face from the edge then it dropped down in thickness along the top and bottom so if you were splitting knotty wood it wouldn't pinch too bad as just the first inch or so was thick. I had a hatchet like that too.

As long as we're talking axes, I've got a problem with the handles loosening up in our dry summers. Wouldn't more wedges swell in the damp of winter, get too tight and crush the handle wood?
Yes, I know I could soak them, but can't keep them in water year-round.

Don't soak them in water (although that will work temporarally), Try soaking for a week or two in boiled linseed oil. Might even get it in the sun so it gets hot.

Have any of you guys made a handle for an axe or hatchet head? I have been able to pick up a few heads at the random garage sale, and I think it would be great to make a new handle. Kind of gives you more of a connection to the tool as well (no pun intended).
I am a woodworker, so the idea of making a handle is not technically overwhelming, but i figured if any of you have done it, I would love to pick up any pointers!

You're going to need a draw knife. Also, you have to use very dry wood.

And a splitting froe:
Hickory preferred (maybe hickory firewood?)
Split to basic "blank"
Watch the Grain! you want it in line with the swing!
Go to it with the draw knife, and maybe a spoke shave
Scrape/file to final finish.
Char it (Hardens the wood)
Finish and fit.

the pulaski is a USFS stamped axe
the small boys axe marked kelly axe & tool works charleston w VA USA which dates it between 1930-1940
the large kelly works true temper flint edge is a 6lb head with a rare blacksmith scene stamped into it.

OK, I'm pretty damn jealous of the Pulaski, so you can only imagine how jealous I am of the Lincoln. I appreciate your use of the tool (as shown in your removal of the mushrooming), as opposed to not touching it as a collector's item.

I keep meaning to buy a Velvicut Hudson Bay to start a proper axe collection.
You should get the Best Made Hudson Bay. It's essentially a Velvicut with a longer handle, you can get it unfinished, i.e. without the hipster handle painting. I've got one, it and a mystery steel camp axe make up my axe collection.

I've got a Colt that I picked up at a gun show, a Kelly w/sheath that I got from a pawn shop and I recently splurged and bought a brand-new Estwing with the leather-wrapped handle from Sears. All of these are short-handled. I have never used any of these, I just like them.
Oh, and I have a long-handled Craftsman in the shed that does see occasional use.

I have a few axes and other tools. I will try and get some pictures. This brings me to my "holy grail" quest. This is a sharpening gauge from the US Forest Service and can be used for pulaskis (fire ax). Does anybody know how I can get one?

I have a collection of mortise axes from 1700-1850. They were used to chop out mortises in timber frame construction.
I have three of the Cold Steel Pole Axes and a Cold Steel Swiss Halberd. That's 28 total feet of awesome!
I also have quite a few tomahawks, mostly Cold Steel.
For logging/non-fighting axes I just have one I got for 5 bucks at a thrift store when I was broke. It's pretty awful. I'll be getting a Gransfors small forest axe when I get some extra cash my wife doesn't know about.

i dont have anything i would call a collection, but i have 2 laying around.. however, i stumbled across one on ebay or craiglist a while ago, and its something i really want to pick up one day just as a wall hanger to place on the brick wall my fireplace is set inside.. the one i found was old, but i was surprised to discover they are still being made today.. its called a "Chopper 1" axe.. its been made in the usa for years, and is basically still the same as the older ones..

Well, I'm assuming it's a railroad axe. The markings can be seen in this thread: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=294626, albeit, only at one angle. As others have suggested, it may not be a RR axe, but I can see "&OH", so I'm going with it having said "Baltimore & Ohio" at some point!
