I'm working on a project and need to clean up some fillet welds and am looking for a product to smooth it out and clean up some other areas. I've heard about Alvin Products - Lab Metal Compound, but thought that it was fairly pricey at about $35 for 24oz.

Anyone have any recommendations? This stuff sounded like it might be an interesting product, but sticker shock got to me. I suppose that I could just use bondo, what does everyone else use.

A flap disc on a 4.5" grinder will get them welds about as smooth as you would want providing you can get at them. I have heard of Lab Metal but have no experience with it..........good luck

Ford Cragar, Hello I'm from Renton FYI.................

I have a need myself to fill out and form a small rusted area on one of my Camaros rear frame areas.

Suggestion to use BONDO is too generic and not real help.......

Ive seen but not used "BONDO" that bills itself as All-Metal or having aluminum media within the bondo.....

Please follow up or contact my Email (below)

regards,

The application that you are considering is not a place where you would use bondo, All Metal or any similar product. If you have rust damage on a car, it should be repaired with new metal and welded in properly.

The application that I'm considering, is where several pieces of 1/2" plate are welded together, I just wanted to clean up the fillet for cosmetic reasons.

My dad has used JB weld on cast iron and steel to touch up poor castings. After powder coating you couldn't tell it was even there.

If your looking for a filler thats not bondo. Ive used USC Duraglass on a jetski which is fiberglass. It also says its for metal. Though if I remember it cost me $25 at NAPA.
