I have narrowed down my search to a few compressors, this is one. It may have been discussed before, with all the online searching I don't recall. It will work for my the question is the same- noise. Reviewer claims it's quiet but I was also told by a salesman that 90 db is quiet!

So if someone has the model what is the deal?

Thank you

It's quieter than anything you'll buy at a big box store (HD, Lowes or Tractor Supply) but it's not THAT quiet. For THAT quiet you need to go to a screw or rotary vane compressor and these don't work that well for intermittent usage. They are build for continuous usage and don't like to cycle on and off.

This is a good summary. The pump turns at 734 RPM whereas the big box store units are typically running over 1000+ RPM. As a practical example, both my neighbor and I had the Husky 3.x HP 60 gallon air compressors. Our garages were over 100 feet away and we both knew when we were running our compressors. Today I've moved and have a pair of Champion 5 HP compressors. As a comparison, the Champion makes more of a lower hum outside your garage and you need to be closer to hear it. People would find them "quieter". I would say they're "not obnoxious" like the big box store ones.

Noise needs to be quantified to have any real meaning. A Quincy QT5 with silencer installed between pump and air filter housing will measure about 83 dba. Download a sound meter and checks few compressors so that you don't end up with something you thought was going to be quiet but isn't meeting your expectations.

I would be careful about assuming a Champion 2 stage would be quieter than anything that HD sells. I don't think my father's HD 2 state is any louder than his old (late 70s) Champion was. Also, much of the noise is related to the intake plumping.
