It's definitely a low end model. My dad has one and it works fine for him because he doesn't wrench much. If you plan to use it a lot, I'd spend a little more money...

Craftsman friction slides on their "Homeowner" series are okay... but really drag once you load the drawer down. I'd recommend Quiet Glide at the very least, but ball bearing drawers are quite a few notches higher in quality and usability without costing exceptionally more.

Ditto.....

I had one of the 'portable' boxes with friction slides.....it will only take you about 5 min to regret the decision.....

I now have the roll around and upper box with the ball bearing slides....much better.

I saw that craftsman in the store. Real piece of junk. The top of the bottom cabinet was all dented just from it having the top cabinet put on it. The sheetmetal is really thin.

Do not buy it. I would be willing to pay $35 most for those. If you want a craftsman get one with ball bearing drawers.

Just buy another HF cart if you need more space it's wider and should hold the same amount of tools as the craftsman. Even better buy the bigger box HF has for around $400.

The ball bearing cabinets from Craftsman are really solid, I have a 6-drawer topper on an 8-drawer roller. But the homeowner sliders really do drag down, as has been said, and the metal isn't as heavy. If it's for casual use and light storage, it'll be fine. If it's going to see battle, I'd pass and target something more stout.

I have to hardily disagree with you on this. I too have these with the bearing slides, and they are complete ****! They are thin, twist easily and the bearings are a joke. The low end HF unit is by far a superior product. I'm not saying the HF is a really good unit, just that it is much better than the Craftsman unit.

The HF large box is actually a very nice unit. Torin also makes some decent quality stuff and is sold at Northern tools. If you take your time putting either the HF or the Torin together, and use good fasteners (NOT those supplied) you will be much happier with the money spent.

It seems like the low Craftsman stuff is overpriced ad not of good quality. Their high end stuff is nice but pricey. I have the larger US General boxes from HF and they are far better than the non ball bearing Craftsman stuff I have, and it cost less than the Craftsman ballbearing stuff. Also the HF boxes use a thigher metal than the Craftsman stuff, even the low end ball bearing stuff.

Some of the HF stuff is actually decent. I use Sears boxes and they are all sliders, but I keep the slides greased and use care. The slides work but if you stress 'em, they can wear through and start to hang, then your unit is a PITA to use. The ball bearing would be mucho better, but was not affordable when I purchased. The box prices seem to be coming down some - I saw a 40" combo on sale for nearly what I paid for my 40" bottom. Sears gets a premium on most everything - about $150 on their 60 gallon compressor for instance. BUT - if you keep checking, you can get a deal. I got my Hobart 140 welder for right at $400 on a one shot $100 off web special with free shipping. So you never know.

Sears premium to the extreme: I've been looking at mill/drills and the basic China mill/drill from HF is $899. A green one (same model) from Grizzly is about $1200 and one from Enco is about $1300. The same mill/drill but black with CRAFTSMAN labels and a base is $2295 from Sears. I think not. :wtf: I can buy a monster mill from Grizzly for less than that with shipping.

I own that cheap craftsman. It works well with the basic amount of tools but don't load the drawers down. Matco man keeps coming by an now i have found that my bottom box has become a conglomerate of everything and its momma. I need a bigger box, but it lasted me 2 years with no probems.

I wonder if there's a way to retrofit a roller bearing slider to the cheaper Craftsman boxes? I have one of the other 5 drawer slider work station kits and am happy with it for now but I will eventually move up to a much larger tool box system. I got it when it first came out and I think I only paid like $70 for it. I can't believe in the span of just 2-3 years it's gone up that much in price. I would have never even given it a thought at the price they want for it now.

Here's what I'm talking about:

I have that model of Craftsman tool chest. It was purchased for me by my wife the Christmas before we got married, so I'm not gonna get rid of it - but I do wish it had ball bearing drawer slides. The drawers drag a little when they are loaded down with tools. But - it does store my tools and doesn't look bad either.
